How do they come up big or small?

I'm wondering if to get a 17 or 17.5 inch..
I'm 5ft5 and I have a size 6 backside but quite long hip-thigh. I normally have a 17 inch but I rode in a friends 17.5 TG today and I have to say I found it pretty comfy...

I'm wondering if I go for a 17.5 wether it will give me more room when jumping as the seat is quite deep? Room to lean back and slip my reins XC ect or to jump a bigger fence without the cantle getting in the way or will I just be swimming around in it?

Thoughts?

Is the kent and masters saddle the leather version of the thorowgood?

If it is I would go for the 17" :D

Having said that I'm 5'4 and don't find a 17.5" saddle massive.

I've had quite a few Thorowgoods, and I find that you need to be quite sure which size you need, as it's not just the seat size that changes, it's the flap length too. I'm 5'11 and find that the 17" is way too small for me, the 17.5" is perfect, but the 18" is too big and I can't get my knees into the knee rolls properly. There's a measuring guide on the TG website, but that recommends that I'm well into an 18" saddle, but in practice that just didn't work.

Ok thanks. I'll have a look on their website. I found the knee rolls of the 17.5 perfect, plenty of room to jack my stirrups up and I felt really secure.
The panels won't be smaller on the 17inch? My horse has a wide back and he needs the wider panels/gullet.
Hmmmmmm

Typical! Just measured myself and 54 from hip to knee, just on the cusp between 17 and 17.5ins! That makes it really easy to decide, not!
:)

Panels will be the same width. The cob one's esp as nice a wide. The older griffin ones have ridiculously narrow panels tho.

The seat size is about standard but the saddle flaps aren't very generous so if you've got long legs you might be better with the 17.5". I'm 5'8 and slim ish (size 12 roughly) and have a 17" because the horse is very short in the back. The seat is a perfect size but the flaps a bit short.

Ah ok thank you. I'm going to get one of the new ones, I love how weight baring the panels are :).
I'm going to borrow my friends 17.5 one for a jumping next week and see what the instructor thinks. Hopefully then I will know if it's too big or not. My legs aren't particularly long sadly, I fit in regular jeans.
I'm going to buy off the Internet and then get it fitted hence the confusion. Save myself £50 doing that rather then buying off saddler! :)

I'm 5'9", size 16 and usually take a 17 1/2" in saddles but I ordered an 18" K&M hi-wither GPD saddle going by the directions on the Thorowgood website. I'm glad I did as I sat in a 17 1/2" hi-wither model at Robinsons on Thursday and found the seat a bit small and constricting, I couldn't get a full hand behind my butt to the cantle either so I think the 18" will be spot on.

Ok thank you, I'm going to see if there is more then a hand in my friends saddle! If there is will get the 17inch thanks!! :)

Space front and back depends what you find comfy!

Hope you've factored the horses back length in this? Mine just can't manage anything longer than a 17"

Keep an eye on ebay as tthey come up regularly at half the price, as long as you know what model you need (and make sure it's the newest version with changable gullet as the slightly older ones without are identical!)
