Thorowgood T4 Cob. Opinions?

Im struggling to decide between a Wintec Wide (new model) and a TG T4 Cob.

My horse is not a cob, but a Welsh D x TB type and has huge shoulders and a rather broad back. She is short coupled as well, so it needs to be accomadative of this factor.

My concern is that i have a TG Maxam Cob already, im not a fan of as i feel that the panels are too narrow and almost 'bulbous' in shape. Not what id expect for a saddle for a broad backed horse.

Is the TG Cob also narrow panelled and bulbous?

Nope, the T4 panels are much better: wider and flatter. It also depends which maxam/griffin model you tried: they changed them almost yearly and some did have stupidly narrow panels. Others have really wide flat panels.

However the T4 rear gusset is too deep and usually very over-flocked. It makes the back sit higher than the front on low withered, bum high horses. Suits some but not others.

I think the rear panels are not too bad, but the front panels are very thin, and this makes for both front to back balance issues, and instability at the front where there is no support. I think you'd want custom flocking if buying one, with softer flocking at the back for many cobs, and more flock at the front for almost all.

I've not seen a Maxam in the flesh but know many people find they fit cobs well - we fit some wide horses with quite neat almost "narrow" trees, they're not narrow, but a very wide tree can swamp some shapes such as the more "slab sided" New Forests. A very wide panel can even extend beyond the muscle along the back, and end up on the ribs which is not advisable.

I have a Wintec Wide for my haffy and it is a much better fit than my T'Good cob saddle, but not as comfy for me (but that is never my priority). I would love a New Wintec Wide as I have a New ordinary Wintec and my TB has been gone so well (for better than in a T4 or in a beautiful well fiiting L&R saddle).
