Does anyone know if they are as good as the promotional blurb says on the Thorowgood website? They are advertised as being good for horses with high withers and veterans or ex-racehorses that have muscle wastage, so I think that sounds perfect for my horse.
I want something to see me through a couple of months, and which will fit a tricky 17.2hh ex-racehorse until I get the special custom made saddle (which i'm still currently saving up for).

Two, local so called ''master saddlers'' have recently fitted and sold me 2 very expensive and totally ill-fitting saddles, and are refusing to refund me, which is why I am going down this route, after the advice of my horses back man.

I am looking for a Thorowgood high wither in either 17.5" or 18" and narrow/med gullet (although I should be able to buy the gullet seperately if it's fitted with something else). If anyones knows of any for sale please PM me. Thanks!

I have the normal T4 in brown equisuede and I am very pleased with it - not sure about the high wither version, but the normal one is really good :)

Hope you find one.

I love them! I’m getting one fitted to the beast next month, they’re one of the few saddles I can ride in without a seat saver. He’s a hi-wither tb and of everything that I’ve tried (Albion, Falcon etc) the Thorrowgood is the one he’s gone best in. I did borrow an older one but it’s not been right on him (also not a hi-wither) so having a bit of time off before we purchase one. The worst thing I’ve heard about the t4 is that the suede seat is horrible to sit on if it wet but I usually have a seat saver on (and also try to avoid rain where possible!!). I assume that’s not a problem with the t6 as it doesn’t have the suede bit.

I've just got on for my TB, had TG saddles in the past.

For the money, yes I would say they are very good, very comfortable, light weight, you can have them re-flocked like any other saddle, you can change the gullets and make very minor adjustments with the fish inserts, I'd say there good for hacking, but I'd have to argue as to whether they offer the rider the best position, it depends really on you and your horse, like any saddle it needs to suit your horses way of going and fit very well, although designed for a TB horse, doesnt mean there suited to your TB if you see what mean, if your used to riding in a good saddle, you may hate it for flat work and will hate it even more for jumping in as I think GP's are more like VSD, although the jumping model isnt bad.

For the price, you can't go wrong with one, I think every tack room should have one, there versitle, never let you down, well made but don't suit everyone to ride in.

yeah they deffinately fit high withered horses, also good for ones with muscle wastage.I had one om my horse whilst his back recovered from a bad saddle previously. Lovely saddle

Oh thank you. This all sounds like good news. I have been so depressed after the terrible experiences I've had with the local saddlers, who, it seems were more interested in my wallet than my horse.

After my back man told me to return the Stubben, the said saddler, who I'd spent a fortune with, told me that he ''would not entertain opinions of others because in his opinion the saddle is fine''
The other saddler, who sold and fitted a too wide Albion, which causes pressure marks wont refund fully as she says that 'I said I agreed with her to fit a slightly wider saddle because we suspected the horse would fill out" What rubbish! I paid her to fit a saddle to my horse and she successfully fobbed me off with the nearest fitting one she had in her van on the day and advised me that it would be fine as he's going to fill out! Also they say that I kept it for too long before complaining, but they were prepared to give me a (very low) part refund or part exchange, but my argument is my template has not altered, so she fitted it wrongly to begin with. I also think I can get more than their measly part refund offer if I sell it myself!
I'd like to name and shame, but I believe that's against forum rules!

I probably wont do any jumping in the synthetic until I can get myself sorted with a really good fitting and secure jumping saddle, but as long as I can keep him in work, and I'm not hurting his back, then I will be thrilled.

i have the t4 high wither for my very high withered mare, i also have the t4 cob for gelding. i much prefer riding in the high wither very very comfy. also suits mare perfect, i can quote saddler fitter as saying you would not get a leather saddle that fits this well unless it was specially made. fantastic saddles, easy clean, comfy, light, need i go on? i love them!

I've been riding my mare in a T4 high wither saddle for nearly three years now and love it. Fits her beautifully, offers excellent grip and security to rider and doesn't take much looking after. My original plan was to buy a leather saddle as soon as I could afford it but it fits her so well I haven't needed to.

I have the thorowgood T6 high wither GP and it's super. Fits my mare really nicely, and is dead comfy. If you can, I would get the T6 over the T4- it looks like leather, and if it fits, I don't see the need in replacing with leather.

I love the Thorowgoods too!! I've got a bit of a collection off ebay now of the different types - well I justify it by telling my hubby I have no idea which will fit my 3yo best! ;)

I have:
17.5" T4 high wither - new style
17.5" T4 std wither - new style
17.5" T4 std wither - old style
16.5" T4 cob - old style

The top 3 have the changeable gullets but the cob style is the older type without.

My friend recently got a very thin TB with razor withers and he borrowed my hi-wither saddle, which fitted him really well with the Fish in as well.

One strange thing about the Thorowgoods is that the seat measures strangely, so my 17.5 saddles actually measure just under 18.5" from stud to cantle, so you might find you get lost in a 18" saddle. I'm 5'11 and the 17.5 is plenty big enough for me, especially so in the newer (more forward cut) T4s.

I currently use the T4 high wither saddle its great, fits well and really good, i'm currently looking at up grading to the dressage high wither but i'm in 2 minds to stick with the t4 or go to t6, plus the high wither one is not easy to find on discount sites or other sites for resale

looks like my girl is just going to have to get a new one later on x:)
