I currently have a Wintec 500 but I'm finding it a little slippery - sitting on what sometimes feels like a greased pole on a ditzy thoroughbred isn't always great! It's been checked by the saddler who has said the fit is fine.

I've been looking at other options for new saddles and being on a fairly limited budget the Thorowgoods look like a possible option. I was wondering what people's thoughts are on these. Are they a similar feel to the Wintecs in terms of 'grippiness'?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I hate Thorowgoods, well actually I sat in one 10 years ago and vowed never to do so again! They may have moved on since then but IMO if a Wintec fits then it's the better option!
I really dislike the Wintecs with the equileather seats such as the 500, as you say they are really slippy. The horse I jump has a VSD which is a straigher-cut 500, and when I hack him I always use a sheepskin seat saver to be on the safe side. I had a 500 for my first pony and hated it, and I've had a 2000 (slightly more forward cut and has an equisuede seat) for two subsequent horses and loved them! So much more grippy!
I'd suggest a) getting a seat saver, b) getting a wintec 2000 (fitted though as they are slightly different) and then as a last option, c) getting a Thorowgood T4 (the Maxam was the one I sat in and they are just awful!)

I have a wintec 2000 and although I prefer my leather saddle it is nice to ride in.... though I was sold one about an inch to small for me so cant raise my stirrups enough to jump in!!

i've just bought another Wintec for my youngster and i'm v.pleased with it,i also have a Isabelle Werth DR one and thats fab too.Having to sell it to fund a leather one.I thought the Thorowgoods looked a lot cheaper and unstable

I've had six Thorowgoods over the past 12 years and only found one a bit slippery - that was an early endurance model and they've changed the material now to a suede effect, which is quite grippy. I can't comment on Wintecs as have never ridden in one.

I have a Wintec,250 i think, I find it ok! Have tried a Thorowgood, hated it so much!! I felt as if I couldn't feel my horse under me at all. I also stuck to it ,everywhere possible, which I hate! May suit yourself though? I'd suggest you try the Wintec with the suede seat first.

Neither - had problems with both not fitting properly and causing damage to a couple of different horses from skinny exracers to broad backed Highland...

Binned them and bought Saddle Cos alround - thay are about the same price second hand, a great fit, and much more adjustable than any synthetic...

Plus they are really comfy and secure....
