Sorry but the article in Cov. Telegraph really does the college no favours. It is about a girl on a BA equine course that was scared to ride more than one horse and has been given one horse to ride all the time.
This is admirable and I do think that Fran Penn is an excellent trainer/ instructress but should people such as this young lady be choosing and be encouraged to choose a career with horses.
In the real world she is going to have to deal with all sorts of horses . I'm just not sure about it, but I wish her well.

I shared at flat with someone who was very much like that while I was there. Did it mention a name?

I was really suprised how many of the girls on my course were nervous around horses and very picky about what they'd ride. You'd think the college would do more to help them change seeing as the course is already under fire for not being industry applicable.

Think they are really trying to help her ,which is lovely but should such a person be accepted onto ,what I believe ,is a degree course. I may be wrong Don't like to print the girls name on here.

One thing I love about Fran is that she will really help you (horse wise) if your nervous (My confidence when jumping is getting worse and worse and she's more then happy to help me out and give me some easier horses for afew weeks until I'm happy again).
I totally agree with you that no, it isn't good that she should beon one horse all of the time (she must be really nervous because the college has plenty of nice horses) and she wll struggly hugely when out in the indusrty if she is required to ride.

Fran Penn is fantastic at giving confidence to people. I've been on the receiving end of her teaching and she helped me no end.

Ok riding one horse is not the way to progress but confidence only comes with time. so maybe in time she will ride a diffrent horse.

You selling big birdie? I mis Missie.

i was at this college and my mare was used in the school sometimes and when i had lessons you were put on whatever you were given and that was it,no ifs or buts! It was very strict back then but that was a nearly 7 yrs ago so things might of changed! I sometimes rode a mare that was a bugger to ride and would try and attack you in the stable, they found out she was pregnant a month before she was due! We all kept saying she'd got fat but no one listened! A 18mth old colt got into her field one day and no one thought anything of it supposedly.Turned out to be a stunning foal, poor mare no wonder she was a moody bitch. Sorry totally of the subject, when i was living there they weren't very understanding of anyone nervous really when it came to lessons,we were training for pretty important qualifications though so you wouldn't of really been on the course if you were very nervous.

i know a couple of people and they are nervous about handling the horses even to just lead them somewhere. although i agree that its just a matter of getting your confidence up if your nervous about leading a quiet horse i really dont think they are going in the right job
