Just sitting here thinking of all the things I want to improve on and learn but realisation of money and lessons is kicking in!

So question is....those of you who can't afford regular lessons but like to school and learn/teach your horse new things what do you do? Where do you get your hints and tips from??

: o )

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At one stage we couldn't pay for regular lessons so at the weekend I would go and work for RI and in return I would get free lessons, don't know if this is possible with you but it helped me a lot :)

Watch a lot of videos. Preferably German. Take it all in from there.
I don't really jump anymore (On Beanbag anyway, he much prefers his poncing) and I learn a lot. When you can't afford lessons, Youtube is your friend :D

We often go and watch BSJA or BD. It really helped me on my approach to a jump and being committed to getting over. BD learnt a lot too both how I want to ride and how I dont want to. :)

Thanks all! All three options are good for me as I'm not that great with sitting down reading huge books : o )
Can't believe I didn't think of you tube, duh!

Never thought about the intro class idea either - is that the one where you do it online? That's a great idea.

Video yourself riding - it is really effective.

(And if you are brave enough, post of here and ask for critique - it may be harsh but bet it gives you heaps to work on!!!)

Not sure I'm brave enough for that yet! lol Got some things I want to work on before I 'm ready for the world to see us hehehe

I've found a really good (and reasonable) dressage trainer who I have once a month and at the end of each session we run through 2 tests and she marks them and we work out a plan of action for the rest of the month.

I'm also a fan of the video camera....nothing gets your arse in the saddle and shoulders back like being forced to watch it in full HD glory!!

Having some knowledgable friends on the ground once in a while doesnt go a miss either :-)

This is a really thoughful post!

My friend was a RI, she comes up and gives me a lesson in exchange for just being around the horses :) She gave me loads of confidence jumping - I get so nervous I feel like I stop breathing lol.. :(

I'm going to have a nose on youtube now.

Have you thought of perhaps having a shared lesson with a friend? Usually will work out cheaper :)
Also, I don't know if it would work for you but my mum teaches and there's a hairdresser on the yard who wants lessons but can't afford them, so nowadays my mum and I have beautiful haircuts and she's getting regular lessons! Maybe come to some sort of agreement if thats possible and you know your instructor well enough to do that.
