Don't use them on one - don't use anything at all.
But on the other I go a little OTT, generally bandage then boot (saw a horrific injury as a result of boots once - if it had had bandages on it probably would have walked away a bit sore but no more).
I really dont like shaped travel boots (the ones that bend over the hocks). I saw a horse panic in them and its put me off using them ever more. Around the same time my mare would literally buck and even squeal as soon as I put them on and that did it for me.
I do however have a fab set of travel boots that arent shaped (but they extend above the hock and knee's in a straight line if you see what I mean). If I am going any distance I put those on, otherwise often travel without anything
(old mare travels like a dream resting one foot most of the way - she LOVES being carried
) If it was a youngster or a horse I didnt know I would put on the unshaped travel boots though
I cannot get shaped ones that actually fit. My mare trashed the travel boots i had after a rather long and hurrendous journey. She still needs protection so I bandage her and she seems to travel better
overreach boots in front now, that's it. Katy travels very happily like that, no sweaty legs any more.
depends on the horse though, obv.
i have a 4 yr old who has suddenly decided that exiting sideways off the ramp is much better, so i'm seriously considering booting her up. trying to keep half a tonne of horse straight when it would rather go sideways is not easy, so she needs protecting.
Brushing boots & over reach boots, the horses don't like the travel boots on the back, I got in the way once when a horse was trying to kick his back travel boots off - he got me in the knee - never again!
Chancer wears thermatex stable wraps - more to keep his feather clean - he is sensible sturdy gypsy cob, no shoes on and travels well.
I used to travel my previous gypsy mare and Cairo Clydesdale the same way - they were far happier without thick boots on - I think due to the hair they have they got far too hot.
Our new clydie came down from Scotland to Essex with nothing on her legs - very well known transporter who prefer to travel with no boots unless they are known to be a bad traveller.
With my WB, she hated boots and she was a liability so she travelled with overreach boots all round, brushing boots and knee boots and this worked well.
I dont use any boots on any occasion - travelling, xc or hunting. Horsey hates them and the travel boots cause more problems than you would believe with him.. If you boot him up, while you are putting the back ones on, he is pulling the front ones off..
our mare never really liked the fitted travel boots, we had an old pair of the straight shires ones for ages but they disintigrated best we could then find was the polypads ones. Took her out in field put them on and let her go 2 mins of leg waving later and a little charging she was fine so left her grazing in them keeping an eye on (field at back of house) now even if she has them on twice a week she will have a hop when you lead her off but otherwise fine.
Couldn't leave her with nothing she is not a stable traveller and also wears over reach all round as she has pulled shoes off before.
boots on the front, nothing on the back. I always used to travel him with nothing, then a pony on the yard fell over in the trailer and nearly sliced off the bottom of her leg (no shoes on either!)
I started travelling with bandages on the back and he started trying to throw himself to the floor everytime he went in the trailer. I tried everything, thinking it was a slippy floor or something else - as soon as I took the back bandages off, he travelled fine!
He seems to be ok with boots on the front so Im leaving those on for now. He does get the odd scrape/graze on the back leg but still better than him throwing himself around!
I use Mark Todd Travel boots as my girl likes to jump from the top of the ramp lol! She doesn't mind them at all though. She doesn't even do the "Ministry of funny walks" any more.
My friend has never used anything and has not had any problems. She travels an awful lot.
Another friend used nothing and had to have both of her pony's hind legs stapled up as she trod on herself. Whether that was cause more by the pony seldom travelling I don't know. She may not have got her "trailer" legs!
My warmblood and my sister's connemara go in travelling boots, just because they don't mind, and it gives some protecting. My pony goes with front travelling boots, but nothing on the back, but she never gets anything on her back legs, because she doesn't really like it haha.
Bandages as my grey in the siggi nearly killed herself with them
She is a little silly sometimes and when we went to buy her owner didnt tell us that shed never had them before she ended up jumping over the breast bar smashing the light with her head + cutting her head open from poll to half way down the nose which had to be stapled cut open both of her underneaths of her front legs and brisket area, a lesson learned id say. She is a perfect travller with bandages on and tends to take herself into the horsebox
