Do you use two reins out hunting or do you use roundings?

Thinking of hunting my girl in one but never used roundings before - wondering if two reins will be a pain in the ass?

I would either use roundings, dead easy, but I dont like em as the constant action makes my horse stand up and wave to the Queen if he has to stand around :-O

or (best I reckon) dont use roundings, knot the curb rein firmly and use the snaffle unless things go pear shaped - thats what i do for hunting sponsored rides etc. he still knows the rein is there so behaves himself but doesnt get the unfair constant action of the curb rein.

just a thought but it works for me....

I hunt in a gag with 2 reins & also have to use my whip but I am acustomed to it so it doesn't bother me. DO what is easiest for you. You can start in roundings & work up to 2 reins.
I find my lad fine on the snaffle rein but purley because he knows I have the other for back up!!
Your there to enjoy it not have a fight!

I do too but lots of people hunt in just one or roundings on a pelham. Depends a bit on the horse I guess. I do find it all a bit of a handful at the beginning of the season - especially with flask, changing gloves, sausage rolls etc! I use rubber reins on both snaffle and gag so can't knot one but have hunted with two reins since I was a kid as my mother wouldn't allow me to use roundings so am used to it now - I hang my whip round my neck for flask time!

I used to use two reins out hunting when I did hunt in a Pelham, however I find with the Cheltenham gag I didn't need to. I think its kinder if you can actually manage two reins, as when the field slows you can ride the horse just from the snaffle rein, it did make me work incredibly hard but when I switched to a gag and I had my hunting whip I found having one rein much easier.

Thanks guys,

I like the idea of using two reins and knotting one. Don't think I will always need the curb rein but want it there just in case. Will see how she goes with that x country before I take her out hunting.

Thanks again

I use a Pelham and double reins keeping the curb slack most of the time. However I went on the least enjoyable hunt ever last Saturday when practically all the first hour was spent fiddling around and waiting in woodland. This was followed by a complete hooley downhill where the entire field went mental. I had brakes courtesy of the curb reins but my wife overtook around 40 horses at the gallop before regaining control.

Incidentally why do so many people seem to believe that using my horse as buffers is even slightly OK?

I hunt in a poper double bridle and dont find it a problem at all, but i don't carry a crop if i can help it. I find it works better than roundings or a gag type bit. plus you have the advantage of being able to drop the bottom rein if you dont need it.
Ron's mouth doesn't get sore in the double bridle but it did in the dutch gag... work that out!
