Those of you who keep your horses at home...

Some good points of having your horses at home...
they are always there; i love looking out the window just to check they're all there, or walking down the field just to see them
everything will always be where you left it as there's no one else to mess up you're lovely clean things
plus the main thing i love is being able to do everything for my horses, having things done exactly my way gives me huge piece of mind
Yes there are negatives but i wouldn't want my horses anywhere but home

I keep my horse at home , i love it ! i hack only and have 18,000 acres to do it on .so a riding arena is no loss to me .
i can look out any window and see her ,, i have cctv in my stables and yard linked to the tvs in the house to keep my eye on things at night, doing things as i like , my yard is always clean and tidy , nothing goes missing !!
i love doing all the work , my husband is a fantastic help bless him ! as 14 acres is a lot to look after but we wouldnt want it any other way !

I've just got my boy back to my own yard at home after loaning him to an equine college for two years.

Advantages: I can look out from my bedroom window and see him grazing happily!

I can hack out whenever I want to, wearing whatever I feel like and not have to adhere to any dress code!

It costs less because you don't have to pay for livery anywhere (or go cap in hand to anyone; as mine has got sweet itch it'd be hard to find anywhere to take him in I suspect)

We;re well and truly bonded which you don't get if your horse is at a livery yard and living away from you.

I can pop out to see him whenever I want & ride when it suits me without having to make an appointment.

I can decide which vet & blacksmith I have.

I can take the dogs riding with me (kills two birds with one stone!)

There are loads more advantages, just cant think of any more here!

Disadvantages:

Not such good hacking (at the equine college it was fantastic hacking, OK'ish here, but not so good as there!)

Have to "do" him all myself; can be time-consuming.

Have to buy in all fodder well in advance, have to plan, organise vet/teeth, farrier myself and can't sit back and let someone else do it.

Have to get ass out of bed and mucking out/hacking in the middle of winter! (no-one else to help!)

Lack of company & mega problems getting anyone to come as DIY livery (too many others at it??!!). But he's out with the sheep, probably thinks he's a sheep not a horse.

But, on balance, I'd far rather have my boy at home than anywhere else. I dno't have a sandschool as am just a happy hacker, also no transport (yet). But hey, we're as happy as larry. When I was a child I always kept my pony at home, so its not natural to me not to have a horse on the place. No, I wouldn't go back to keeping him away from home: its lovely to be able to pop down to the stable on a wet & cold winter's night and see my man all tucked up and happy!. Bless him. I wouldn't change that for anything, and that's what makes it all worthwhile.

What a wonderful opportunity. I would love to keep my horse at home again.
I was lucky enough to grow up on our own small holding where we kept our horses on our own land. It was fab. We were in the middle of no where in Wales but I just loved it. You can do what you like when you like and your horses are pretty much outside your front door, wonderful! :D
I would jump at the chance to have Seren at home again.

It is not for everyone though. I am not competitive at all. Would love to do some lower level in hand stuff but that is the only type of thing I really enjoy in showing/competing/getting out and about terms.

Really cannot answer it for you. However, you can try it and if you do not like it then move your horse to livery. Is this possible? To try it out first and go from there.

Also if you have enough room, perhaps you could have 1 or 2 other liveries on your yard? A possible idea?

Good luck whatever you decide. I know my choice would be to keep at home :D
