I have had a pony on loan since April, Viewed him at his previous loan home (didnt see or speak to his owner). I didnt meet or speak to his owner til a couple of month after him coming to me and havent spoken to her since.
I know she knows my instructor so probably knows how he is doing through her but I feel i should be in contact with her every so often but dont know what to say.
How often are you in contact with your loan horse/pony's owner?

I have one of my horses out on loan. I speak to her every couple of weeks and email/text every other day. i found her on an ad on project horse and she is wonderful! She is everything she said she would be and more! The arrangement could not work any better and I am so glad I replied to her advert!
I cannot imagine not speaking to her for months on end, I travel down and see them both every two months as well.

We've had out load pony a year and the owner came down 2months after she settled in (x-mas) brought her some treats. Then she saw her at a show held at her yard. The owners are 5mins round the coner and we use the same farrier/instructor and have contact with ppl at there yard so they can always fine out about her. Also have them on fb and they can see all our status and pics of her.

We put our lead rein pony on loan and we went and saw him every 6months

I loan Scooby from my riding instructor/YO, and keep him at the riding school, so I obviously see her every day! She bought him knowing that I wanted to loan him, so he's been kind of mine from the start. It's a great arrangement because if I didn't loan him he'd just be one of the riding school ponies, so it's not like there's another really loving, concerned owner looking over my shoulder all the time - to his real owner, he is a business asset, and to me he is a pet. It works well for all of us.

i have loaned my pony for 8 years, i know the owner well and rarely see her but speak occaisonally more for a gossip than about the pony to be honest!!

I know she sees my instructor alot so finds out how he is then and has told her that she doesn't want to interfeer (sp) but personally i wouldn't see it as interfeering.
When my horse was out on loan i was in contact with the lady who had her, every so often i would ask how she was or she would just text me to let me know and occasionally send a pic as she was 3 hours away so i didn't vist.

One of my ponies was on loan for about 14 years, I vetted the people up front very carefully and did a spot check after 6 months and then relied on a christmas card to hear how he was doing after that

It wasnt that I was not interested its just that I didnt want to interfere and I did trust them completely

They contacted me to get permission to have the pony PTS in the end, by that time he had taught all four of their kids to ride and had lived out a happy retirement with them

As its near Christmas I would hold off for a couple more weeks then send them a card saying how happy you are and inviting them to come and see the horse then its up to them if they want to take your offer up

well my previous loan i was in contact with the owner pretty much every couple of weeks, text call or face to face. but the current one, the owner has pretty much dissappeared of the face of the earth, i've tried to make contact time and time again but to no avail (she has had some personal problems apparently), the loan was arranged through a friend, who also hasnt heard from her. i guess if the owner wanted to know what was going on, they would have contacted you, maybe make an effort once or twice, and if you get no joy you've done your best.

I currently part loan a TB ex-racer and the owner lets me do whatever I like. She is down a couple of times a week but has never interfered. She just enjoys seeing how much the horse is coming on.
I've been really lucky as I hope to event him next year and she does all the running around and is uber supportive and lets me plan his training and show schedule.

One of my previous owners never stopped interfering. She would turn up on my lessons and critisis the instructor who evented to quite a decent level.

For me I don't mind owners being around as long as I can just get on with what I have to do.

Horse is 'loan' (well, more like commondeered) from a friend from the horsey circle where I kept my own youngster.

Saw her most days when she still had her other horse living with mine, then every couple of weeks once he left. Just moved to a shiney new yard and I text her at least once a week. I also see her regularly socially. She's lovely and everything you could wish for when borrowing their horse!

I have been extremely lucky with all our loans - in and out. You have to make it clear, if you can, at the time of loan in or out about how much contact you want in each direction.

I wouldn't loan (again in either direction) to anyone who wouldn't be happy with very frequent contact.

It is likely the safest way to ensure the horse is where it is meant to be and in good health, although not foolproof.
