How do you keep their Manes and tails long and thick and clean!!

Just taken on a grey andalusian who thinks he is a hippo!!

He loves the mud, but then I don’t really want to pull a brush through his mane and tail as I fear I will break the hair and I love the thickness of the mane and tail he already has!!

I have heard mane and tail conditioner is not that great for it???

Any tips greatly received!!

Rugs with necks and lots of cowboy magic products!
Also I fed my con marmit in his feed it stopped him being so itchy and his mane just rocketed down!! How ever does take a week or so to get in the system :)

When my pony had his tail to the floor (before somebody cut it off!!) i used baby oil. It keeps the mud off and tangle free so easy to brush but obvs not loads to make it greasy just enough so it shines i also used it on him mane

You mean like this?

I use baby oil too, but mostly I just shove it in a running plait and leave them to it. It keeps it out of the way when we're doing stuff like this:

(sorry random photos, just in that sort of mood!)

Just for the record, he doesn't live in my garden - he came home to get clipped as there's no power on the yard

If you want to keep a mane and tail long and thick, DON'T brush or comb it, DON'T use those spray detangler things unless there's a real knot, and only wash for special occasions. We pick through ours with fingers about once a week, or if it gets "dreadlock-y" just untangle that bit. The more you brush, the more you'll pull out or break the hair.

Our andies and cobs always have their manes in a running plait which is taken down and redone about once a week.
We do use conditions and de tanglers but I don't think we're doing too badly.

My Andalusians tail is thick and about an inch off the floor. He has a really thick mane too. This time of year I try not to brush at all if I can help it. As long as the mud etc is off his body I couldnt care less. He's stabled at night and usually by the morning most of it has gone. People comment sometimes that I havent brushed him properly, I just shrug my shoulders. I have in the past plaited his mane in lots of plaits which stops the tangles. Occasionally I get the mane and tail conditioner out but not that often!

A bit of mud on a mane and tail isnt a major problem to me as long as the rest of him gets groomed.

I have a PRE with a long mane. Luckily he doesn't role in the field but the wind does cause knots at time
I've used baby oil with good results. I would also suggest Cowboy Magic Coatshine (I think they call it). Its the spray, not the gloopy stuff. It seems to keep the muck off tails and works well on the mane.
One thing I would say is if you are using any product, try not to spray or rub it in at the roots. Some of it can irritate and cause them to rub the mane even more.

I also use a running plait every time I ride although I don't leave it in overnight.

I have a bay mare with a lovely thick long tail and she is clipped at the moment, once a week I put some pig oil on a sponge and go over all her body, legs and tail. When I bring her in at night the mud just seems to slide off, her tail I usually just have to run my fingers through it. Also I find that going over with pig oil once a week gets rid of any scurf thats lurking.

Please tell that to my cob!!! His gets brushed every day...

That was a couple of years ago and it's getting thicker!

I use pig oil on mane, tail and feathers. It's cheap and brilliant! I also use mane and tail.

I share a shetland cross fell with a long mane. We use canter mane and tail conditioner but because he has sweetitch he has a neck cover anyway.

My Haflinger is no longer a chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, he is chestnut with brown mane and tail! My girls call him 'Gardening Barbie!' I leave his mane and tail most of the time, will try the baby oil thing though!

Sorting oout my Clydies today as here in NZ the sun is shining! Wash with a good shampoo, rinse well and put in heaps of conditioner. Leave 20 mins before rinsing out. Finger comb the tangles out.

Never brush or comb when dirty - if you get any dreadlocks then carefully ease the hairs apart with your fingers.

Same for the tail. Put tail in a tail bag 24/7 so that it remains clean and doesn't pick up twigs and other rubbish from the field.

My Friesian tail is to the floor , I never really brush it
Just spray with furniture polish and run fingers through It
His mane is still growing
Result to a full neck rug
So full necks no no !! Inless you want half small other long again I'm leaving this the only thing I do with the mane is plait it

Agree with baby oil for the winter, also use the brush some hairdressers sell called a tangle teezer - works, its gentle, and doesn't seem to pull hair out

I'm new to this long mane lark and going for the once in a blue moon unravelling by hand with a wee bit of detangler... I do get neem oil right in to the root of the tail hairs with them all pre summer and pre winter tho - seems to stop flaky dock and tail rubbing?

Dunno if I can remember how to get a pic on here...

Getting the 11 year nephew up to stay is the secret - he'll stand for hours sorting thru manes in a state of contented bliss!

This is a very interesting thread - I'm puzzling over how to look after my boy's mane and tail.

I've had him for a year now and looking back at videos of him I noticed that his mane is thinner and shorter now than it was when I got him. It is also faded at the ends. I use a human hair brush gently on him and Canter mane and tail conditioner - I shampoo him with tea tree shampoo.

I checked an Andalusian website and they recommend using Betadine shampoo once a week - I've tried to get it but it seems to be discontinued. I'm wondering whether Iodine shampoo would do as the active ingredient in Betadine seems to be iodine.

Has anyone any experience using it (I see that Robinson's stock it).

My boy is an Andalusian by the way
