We've just marked out a 20x40 in one of our new fields but given the recent wet weather its a bit squelchy underfoot.

How do you manage in winter?
Do you only use it in spring/summer?

Is there anything we can do to improve it as we dont really want to end up with it poaching :(

Grass schooling arena, only use it when dry, flat ground tends to hold the water too well so no drainage = furrowed ground which then dries into ruts which if no-one rolls whilst damp ends with no good use when the dry weather comes back.

Ours is a flat bit of well drained field (gravel base) . However we've nothing permanent - each time we put out cones, so a slightly different area is ridden on each time. Still gets a bit poached in places, and we can't use it in the really wet like today, as the grass is too slippy.

We only use it in the spring and summer, grass just gets too boggy. In the winter I try and school out on hacks and hire an arena from time to time. I hate the winter!

I have no miracle cure either I am afraid. I only have grass to ride on although it normally drains well even yesterday with the sun out its still a bit slippy after last weeks rain! Keep saying I will hire an arena once a week but it upsets the routine, its the cost and diesel of doing it too. Maybe in the new year once xmas is out the way.
