Hi All,

So for those of you on Livery and maybe those who are on DIY yards where 'things go astray' :-) .. do you mark your rugs ? and if so how do you mark them ?

I 'm not necessarily thinking of them being stolen but perhaps a communal rug room where they might get mixed up, so you just want to identify which ones are yours ...

Thanks all .. only satsuma's on offer I'm afraid ...

I use sheep ear tags to label most of my stuff. The loop tag style. They're great. I have mine printed with my name and you can choose from different colours. I have yellow and orange ones as they're really bright.

I get mine mail order from http://www.symtag.co.uk/ I think I paid about £12 for loads.

You dont need the pliars either. I just close my tags using my teeth :o

Aside from the option of painting on your postcode/freezemark you could try a blob of fluorescent paint or brightly coloured tape sewn on - an instant visual thing a bit like when you need to recognise your case at an airport!

Hmm Garish rugs is a good idea unless you already have a full wardrobe of 'everyday' branded rugs lol .... Amymay thats a good result for DIY ... although I have been on two where things stayed pretty much where they were left :-)

Spyda thats a great idea ! ... off to check them out ! Don't like the idea of painting them but brightly coloured tape might be an option ... now to find someone who could sew them in for me lol ...

I don't mark mine and haven't had an issue yet. They aren't bright or garish either.

Those who are on working livery and therefore have their stuff kept more communally have theirs marked with the horse's name in laundry marker.

I've been on DIY all my life and never had anything go missing, surely this is normal not 'good'?

If you go in a local pound shop you can probably buy a bag of key ring tags that you can clip on to buckles if you need to mark your rugs.

No, I've never needed to. Everyone has their own space, and nothing has ever gone missing (even on DIY ;))

Same as this we all have our own space & metal bins we can put our own padlocks on. The yard I am on is a big yard, but luckily don't have issues with things going missing. Most of us liverys have our rugs hanging in our stables. I must admit I do lock my nice rugs away, but not because of my fellow liverys.

Talk to local tack shops and police about tack branding. Ours did one jointly a few months back and they marked things like rugs too.

Thanks all ... I've obviously been on one or two dodgy DIY yards then ha ha although as I said I have been on one or two where it was fine !
Thanks PandorasJar, will look into this too.

Nah, no sewing required. They attach perfectly to either the front buckle, surcingle clip or fillet/leg strap rings. They just hang there.

I also clip them to bucket handles, various bits of tack, grooming kit, anything really that I can attach one to. Does help stop things getting mixed up and people dont tend to 'borrow' things of mine when I'm not there! And if they do, I can easily identify what's mine and batter the culprit!! :D

I looked at the order page but it's scary lol, asking for flock numbers etc ...will they call the sheep police if they find out I don't have sheep ?? :-)

I just write their names, neatly at the front near the chest festening straps with black marker pen. If I had a very dark rug, I'd probably use a tip-pex pen. I have to go over the names about once a year as they fade.

I mark mine with my horse's name on a strap or the weatherbeeta logo etc. - we're a small full livery yard but I have two horses stabled next door to each other, and New Horse has inherited some of Retired Horse's rugs, so it avoids any confusion, especially if there's anyone rugging up who isn't regular staff, e.g. one of the liveries lending a hand.

New Horse has medium and heavyweight turnouts that look very similar so I've also spray painted 'H' and 'M' on them to avoid any confusion.

I get all my liveries to mark everthing. Rugs, numnahs, bandages etc. get marked with those school name tapes. Cheap, stay on, and don't look dreadful!

Never had the issue, but a lot of my horses rugs have a name tag on them so I guess I'd just write their name in there

For some reason (half price in a local sale perhaps;)) 6 of my livery horses have identical rugs, sizes only vary by a few inches.

I chalk their names on them and write on the size labels inside. Owners don't want them paint marked. Fortunately we don't have a 'borrowing' or theft from the field problem here, just confusion!

I've never needed to as everyone has their own space. Sheep ear tags are a cool idea though. Would it be possible to get kids nametape things and sew them on the inside? That could work if you had a strong needle and thread :p

Another one with sheep ear tags on her rugs/headcollars/hoofpicks/leadropes . . . but that's an overhang from our last, large, busy, working livery yard where yard staff didn't necessarily know which rug, headcollar, leadrope, etc. belonged to which horse.

That said, not much goes walkabout on our yard . . . despite several horses having the same or similar rugs. I've had scissors and knives go missing, but nothing else.

P

I used to mark my rugs on a big yard when lots of horses were wearing the same - I used a tippex pen to write his name on the inside front of the rug, near the bottom where it wouldn't be in contact with him :)
