Do you run them in a lead and collar or do you use a harness and if it is a harness, is it a specialist one for running or a standard one?

I have 2 car harnesses that fit my girl but not sure if they are suitable or if I need to buy something specifically for running? I'm hoping to do some canicross with her so maybe some cani cross kit?

My husband jogs with out malamute. When on roads etc he uses a harness and 2 metre line with an elasticacted section so there is no hating if Nanook stops for a sniff. When off through woods etc he unclips the lead and clips it round his waist. Nanook stays in his harness but can then run at his own pace. We didn't buy any posh kit but got some with really thick metal stainless steel fixings as with mud and water we didn't want it to rust!

It depends what you're wanting to achieve really - if you want the dog to jog alongside you a collar and lead is fine, if you're wanting them canicross style ahead of you and pulling along then a well fitting harness is a must.

Something with a Y-shaped front, fitted around the neck, space behind the front legs and not impinging on the shoulders or ribs. Not most pet shop harnesses; try Kisi or Manmat. :)

I tried running with Hoover (greyhound) and borrowed a friends Canicross harness for the purpose. Hoover didnt get it at all, and politely trotted alongside me for the first mile and a half at perfect heel :) He then decided that greyhounds don't do stamina (quite true) and I had to practically drag him the rest of the way :D

I would say for your first couple of runs, use a normal lead until you are sure that your dog understands - TBH I just found the harness etc got in the way and was a nuisance :(

I've literally just started so running in her normal cheapy harness until I can afford a decent one. I have a double ended lead which I loop round my waist, again, until I can afford a belt.

Hmm - see she is currently a bit of a puller - in fact - its more that she keeps full tension in the lead when walking than her really pulling which means she prefers to run in front rather than beside me so perhaps a harness might be better for her?

Probably. Tia walks well to heel (on her pinch collar admittedly) but after two runs she really gets into it now and pulls in her harness. She knows the difference between running and walking on a collar.

I've done a bit of Cani x and use a snuggle pets fleece harness which suits a deep chested dober. Cani x kit from the official site is obscenely priced. I got belt with leg loops (I think essential for strong pullers to keep the belt low) bungee with quick release and running line for about 50odd bucks from snow pastors? As long as you have good neck clearance your car harness will do for start. The dogs love Cani x. My boy is like a sled dog as they count you down at the start and goes like stink! The first few mins are quite hairy :)

Also I saw on a dobe forum the other day there is someone on eBay that makes x back harness made to measure at a really good price will dig it out if you're interested in a x back harness.

I run with a running belt, Dylan on elasticated line and his Julius k9 harness. Teal hates a harness so I just use a cheap pound shop hi vis collar on hi vis lead, he runs at heel and Dylan pulls a bit if encouraged or at least runs infront holding the tension of the lead.
