Those that use deosect to prevent flies

I've got the 250ml bottle so going to put 10ml with 500ml water in a spray bottle. Do i need to use all of this 500ml on horse? Also do you spray every two weeks or once a month???

I will patch test first xx

I use the Deosect from time to time for flies- i also use it because i have a cob 2 yr old and i was advised to use it by my vet as a prevention against lice and feather mites as he has lots of hair and feathers!.

When i've used it for flies on my 2 bigger horses i use the full 500ml amount that i've mixed up- i tried at first to spray it on but it made my arm ache as you do hvae to use the full lot!, so i now measure it and apply it with a sponge instead which i find much quicker and easier. i just normally apply about once a month, it does tend to work very well.

Oh and i have to wear a mask when i apply it and change my clothes afterwards as it stinks!- i usually put on then turn the horses straight out otherwise it lingers and makes their stable smell!- it's not unpleasant really, just very strong and overpowering!

I don't need as much as 500ml at a time, so I just put 5ml in 250mls of water instead.
I've been using it on sweet-itchy ponies this summer, applying it over their top lines and tummies once a week, and they have barely been rubbing at all.

I give mine a liberal spraying once or twice a week but havent been finding it that effective now the flies are out in force, will revert back to my sponge this weekend!

Don't mean to put a downer on it but please do a patch test.
Luckily i did one and my mare reacted badly to it almost immediately.
So glad i didn't cover her in it.

Also, don't ever use it when the horse is wet, ie after a bath until fully dry, as this can cause a bad skin reaction (as our vet found out with his own!!)

Like any strong chemical, wear gloves and patch test the horse first.

But it is a godsend for horses targetted by flies, it can last weeks (depends on how much rain) with one application, tiny bottle lasts for months and we were recommended it by head horse vet at RVC so that gave me confidence to use it!

I too wipe it on rather than spray as horse hates sprays but fine with sponge.

Thanks, going to do it prob tomorrow. Will patch test him first though and wear mask etc as my boss who's a vet uses it too and has advised me what precautions to take xx
