...look awfully useful. What are they actually called? I mean the ones without the long lash, that look just like a short stick with the hook thing.

I'd like to get one for Endurance riding purposes, to help with gates (and maybe I'll get around to taking the pony hunting next winter; I keep planning to, but the uni year gets in the way). Who stocks those, and what do I need to look out for?

Actually there are quite a few on ebay but they are listed under hunting whips which isn't actually correct although you could just as well use a hunt whip without the thong/lash :)

Very popular (with me) for carrying out on hacks with a long gentlmans lash on it, when dog walkers refuse to call up their dogs & let them chase horses..... the dogs tend to go away quite quickly, cant think why ;)

Also very useful for giving cars a smack that get too close and when the driver stops they can be told how stupid they were to drive so close they brushed the whip !!

Cool, thanks for all the links! Saw some beautiful antique ones on ebay, that I'd hate to put through the rigors of actually being used...but nice to see some sources for new ones as well!

Um...why are they called "cutting whips"? This brings to mind cow ponies and cattle herds...

Very handy for gates, but if you do manage to go out hunting, please put a lash on :)

Not really advised, asides from the obvious damage, I would imagine it makes a fair clatter.
