On average, basing it on a 15hh small horse, 12x12 approx stable..

How many bales of Straw would you use a week? (Deep littered throughout the week- cleaned out at weekends)
How many bales of Hay would you use a week?
OR- How much hayledge (base it on a small bale- how many of these approx)

Based only on Winter usage and only in at night.

Thanks all.

:D

Depends on the horse, if its dirty or you throw out a lot of bedding you could go through a bale of straw a day, again if its a big eater you could use more than 1/2 bale of hay a day but a small eater may just want 1/3 bale.
I would allow 1/2 bale a day for straw a day as thats easy to add up, and work the hay out by weight as the size of bales can vary a fair bit.

Shes only little so i think 1/2 a bale of hay per night would be right- would fill up two haynets anyways.

1/2 a bale of straw i feel is fair aswell..

Im glad my guesses arent far out.

Can't get my head round it :p so I'll tell you what we use! Approx same size stable and 14.2hh mare.

We order 6 bales of straw a week, and 4 hay - deep litter 6 days, full muck out 1x a week.
She has 5 leaves of hay a day, soaked - 2 in morning, 2 in evening, 1 after field :) and she is a very messy horse!

ETA is only out for an hour a day though!!

This scared me until i saw the Edited add- phhhhew!!

Lets see per horse 4 straw a week and 3 squares of hay in haynet with very small holes at night and if it's really cold or hard frost on ground 1/2 square when they are out. But I always play it by ear if you see what I mean, depends if she gets a short feed every day. I must admit I don't like deep beds, but everyone has their own ideas and ways of doing things:D:D:D:D:D
