Those who clip during summer?

How do you blend in the clip? My lad is a stocky, hairy sod and I'm really thinking of clipping him out this summer, however I do plan to do some low level showing so don't want it obvious that he's clipped!

I clip during summer and I just do the whole horse, but then again I show hunter style, not feathers or hairy bits. I would basically do hunter without the saddle patch and a whole head. Some people do clip down the legs and manage to leave the feathers but that would be too much faff for me.

With my New Forest I clip off the lot around 3 weeks before each show & by then his coat looks great.

No but if your boys feathers begin at the elbows as some traddy cobs do then if you do to the knees he will look ridiculous lol!

Full clip and use trimmers with the plastic comb to blend the legs in. This photo isn't the best example as it was a last minute outing.

Usually at shows he dies on me, hence the idea of clipping him out this summer!

Why does it matter if its not blended in? I clip two of my retired ponies (purely because they dont shed properly anymore) - just a hunter clip so leaving legs on as they live out (I rug when necessary). I used to hunter clip my Welsh D who I showed all summer (he was a very hot horse), nobody ever seemed to worry.

I clip all year and tend to take my clippers down his legs and leave only his feathers (in the summer)

Really interesting thread, I've been thinking the same thing recently.
My cob is 4 and is now doing some work, he was clipped in feb time and is already getting quite hairy and almost sweating just walking.
I've never clipped in the summer before and was wondering what to do about it, as he is veeery hairy!

I used to clip under his belly and that really helped with the overheating but if you are careful it doesn't show (unless they roll!!)

I clip mine about July time normally. He's not a traditional or cobby but he's connie x tb and grows quite a coarse coat and gets far too hot competing. He had his proper summer coat between may and June before it starts growing thicker and I see he's looking hot so needs clipping

Clip all over and grade the legs carefully with either clippers or trimmers. If you're not confident doing it a show person should be able to do it for you

Out of interest, are there any people that show at a higher level and clip out... Just erring on the side of caution incase Ben doesn't moult enough for his show? (County level)
