Just wondering what sort of quantities you'd recommend for a growing(13hh) new forest yearling(well, 16 month old really)? And WHAT combination of feedstuffs you'd use?
I realise that I could contact the SS people, but I'm off to the feed merchants in the morning and with it being a bank holiday weekend I won't be able to contact the SS people til tuesday at the earliest.
Obviously won't be able to get bona fide SS brand, but can get unmolassed beet pulp, alfalfa in one form or another and they do stock grass nuts which I believe would be akin to SS's red bag GN's.

From what I've read of the SS system, the feeds are quite large.....now Lukey is a piggie with feed and would see a big bucket of food as a challenge. I'm I right in thinking that due to the type of feed being provided that this wouldn't pose the kind of problems that feeding a large cereal type hard feed would?

Any info very gratefully received.

Thanks guys

if he was mine he'd be on unmolassed beet, dengie alfa a oil and bailey's stud balancer plus some good grass, natives do not need huge amounts of stud mix, the beet will wet it down enought to be tasty and the alfa is great for growing youngsters, the stud balancer will provide all the micro nutrients but without the calories of a stud mix.
the idea behind the SS range is thet it is fibre based so effectivley a haynet in a bucket scenario, not the same as huge amounts of cereal based feeds.

if he's on decent grass, or getting hay, then i'd feed a bit of alfa (a couple of handfuls, for such a small pony) and a bit of a good vitamin/mineral balancer. not sure if that's SS, but that's what i'd feed. if he's a pig, then a cupful of unmolassed sugar beet is a good idea, to keep the feed nice and sloppy and prevent him from maybe getting choke.
i haven't fed any grain, mix or nuts (other than balancer) to any of mine now for a few years, and they've never looked better or been happier.
