I'm very lucky as I can take mine up to field where the horse I share is kept (also helps that field belongs to my best friend) I don't let her come into fields though with horses as she's not quick enough now to keep out of the way but I can shut her in bit round the stables or in the winter she sits in car as I can see it from wherever I am, even if I'm riding in field.

However this time of year when it's warmer or if i'm hacking out she has to stay at home, which leads to a very grumpy dog :-( xx

Kind of, only because they live on it though.
If I am not on the yard they are shut in. I don't allow 'visiting' dogs, it causes too much hassle all round.

heya, well if your dog gets grumpy at home when your on hack then just take it out for a massive walk when you get home, im sure it would forgive you then :) x

Have taken my dog down a couple of times on a lead and straight into the tack room.
I dont want my dog hurt as lots of horses around (she is very good with horses), would be gutted if she got hurt.
Little pup that got under fence got clipped by my mare, mare was walking to her stable for feed, pup ok, still could of been a whole lot worse.
Dont mind dogs playing or barking dogs, helps the young ones get use to them, just worry about horse or dog getting hurt.

Would take mine to my friend's field when I rode her horse. She hated horses at first (rescue) and we soon got her used to them. She did get chased and the pony clipped her once but she soon learnt to behave. Was more interested in friend's labrador than the horses!

Took her to another friend's yard last week and she wasnt as good - her horses are much bigger, she was a bit overwhelmed bless her! (she's a border terrier x)

I take my two up every day morning and evening, but I have my own yard. They poke around the fields and chase voles and things and have a great time. Both are very good with my horses and sometimes they all have a run up and down the field together - although the dogs (most of the time) have the good sense to be the other side of the fence ASAP :)

There is of course a danger that one of the horses will inadvertently hurt a dog, but the horses are all good with dogs and the pleasure my dogs get from running around seems to make it worth a risk. My older dog will just wait in the field if I go out riding, but my 9 month old wants to come with me so I tend to either leave them in the back of the car or at home if it's too hot.

If it's your yard or the YO doesn't mind (and your dogs are well behaved) take them with you!

Yes, well behaved and friendly dogs are welcome at our yard, provided one cleans up behind them. Its really nice to see them all playing nicely together, all shapes, sizes and ages in a big group. The dogs do not go en masse into fields and interfere with the horses though, that would not be tolerated.

I used to but my dog got kicked by a horse and was killed and I just don't want to risk it. It was no ones fault just an accident as horse got loose couldn't get puppy out the way in time.

Yes he is well used to horses, the only time he is wary is on windy days in the fields because he knows they will chase him(he got chased seriously chased when he was a pup)

So he knows to keep out their way. But saying that he sometimes forgets and walks under them. I am probably lucky the horses are not fazed by dogs, just when the weather is lively. My sisters horse was a chaser and he wouldnt go near it. One of my friends has a young pup and has been introducing it to the horses as they want it to get use to being around them.

If we go out and I can I will take the dog, in fact I am usually quite glad as he flushes out all the mad birds that come sqawking out of the hedges in front of us(my horse isnt fond )

So it works out well. I probably wouldnt want a load of dogs if it was a private yard unless they were already resident. Its what they get use to, saying that some horses wont tolerate and you could find yourself with an injured dog. I have heard stories of horses stamping on and killing a Jack Russell.

Kokopelli, that is so sad. I think that would happen to mine - a pair of whippets - because they are not the most tactful animals around anything that runs. They are kept firmly out of the way of horses.

I am very lucky, my YO is very pro-dog and has several of her own! I do think mine are better behaved though! ;) It's great for them, allows for plenty of socialising and free play, and as someone else said, it gets the young horses used to dogs in a positive way.

Yes I take my very well behaved spaniel - I'm on a very quiet yard (I'm only one there atm) so she doesn't get in anyone's way. She just does her own thing while I'm busy - just have to throw the ball a few times etc, she loves coming with me and is great company, especially on dark nights!

She has learnt from a very young age to keep well out of the way - if I'm riding in the school I have to put her in the car or a stable as she worries when we start cantering. If anyone else's horse is on the yard I shut her away, she wont go near them but I don't want her in anyone's way.

I am very lucky and the yard owner allows dogs onto the yard, they are all well behaved, I don't worry about my dog as been a springer and rising 10 years old he is a pooch and never goes far from me, he is also very cautious around horses as he got chased by moor ponies several years ago, the only problem I have is he will steal apples/carrots out of feed buckets!!!

My horses are kept at home so my dogs are very used to them and vice versa. The collie thinks looking after the horses is his job and he spends his life trying to round them up :)
They pretty much ignore him but I wouldn't let my dogs loose around other horses.

A friend's horse once went for one of my dogs and therefore I will not risk it.

Currently, for various reasons, no, but if I'm not exercising the horse, then often, yes. It's rampant with rabbits, loads of space. Big dog has horse sense, puppies have not much:)

yes, as does YO and other livery, mine and YO's dog are fine together but they dont get on with other liverys dog. He is a rather large bouncy dog compared to my tiny jack russel. he does abit of damage with all the bouncing on top of her!
last year she was stood on, she walked into the arena where a horse was turned out and the horse appeared from the side of the stables have an eppy and landed straight on top of her. i dont think i have ever heard a dog scream so loud! i chucked her straight in the car and rang the vets to let them know i was on my way. she stayed at the vets house overnight on a drip as she was in shock, she was x-rayed the next day and she had dislocated her left hip and chipped a piece of bone off the back. i collected her that eve and she was strapped up and only had 3 legs (other was vet wrapped to her body) she spent a week on cage rest and lots of trips backwards and forwards as there were other complications. the vets were happy that it didnt need surgery and had fused well after 7 days. the bandage was taken off and she was on controlled exercise for a while. she was only just 1 yr old at this point. i stopped taking her down the yard and took her out on the bike as the weather was nice. she now comes down again and is vary wary of them. if she wonders in with one she knows that 'out' means get out the paddock. i only let her in with mine as they are fine with her but she does start running if she seems them being silly! she stays in the stable or the car when i go out on a hack but if i know i am i dont take her down and walk her when i get home.

Thankfully, the YO has a no dog rule which everybody adheres to :).

She has her own dogs on the yard and previously allowed liveries to bring theirs but it just ended up in fights (between the dogs) and bad feeling, so she put a stop to it :).

i dont take mine to the yard, apart from when i am hacking out but even then he's kept in the car and out of everyones way till i am going to get on.
my friend is very different though. she takes her dog onto the yard and lets him bark at the horses. he once got into a lesson of someone breaking in a horse! the youngster didnt like dogs. the YO really dislikes them being in the way aswell

Yes both mine come up to the yard. They are on the yard when I am not riding, crated in the car when I am. If its very busy then they are also kept in the car and are fine with this - I walk them as soon as we get to the yard and in between riding horses as well. Its fine, just applied a bit of common sense. There is a definate clash of personalities with the previous YO's dogs (jack russells) who are very dominant so if she is up there I make sure her dogs are shut away before mine come out and they have been taught then when we come back from the fields, they will be put on leads and walked back to the car - just in case there is something going on I am not aware of. Otherwise all the dogs at the yard get on well together and they even get to "visit" a friends yard as they always got on so well with her 2 dogs.

I took mine to the yard ONCE... he made a bee line for the muck heap and 2 minutes later my lovely white westie came back looking ever so proud of himself... no longer white and stunk to high heaven...

As you can see, from a very young age my dog has never liked being WHITE lol

This is how "I" believe he should look all of the time...

my dog isn't allowed "on" the yard but he comes out hacking with me and when me and my youngster go for wanders.

he is a wolfdog and needs ALOT of exercise so comes absolutely everywhere with us. he is much happier in the back of the car if we left him home alone we'd hv no house left :(

Our yard has a very sensible policy around dogs. They are allowed but must be either on a lead or locked in a stable if you are hacking or not able to watch them. This works really well for us.
I really don't like yards where dogs are allowed to run about unsupervised. It is a recipe for disaster.

I wish people at my yard didn't - some of them chase the horses when in the schools (the YO's wife lets her dogs play in there, so no wonder they chase and frighten ponies), and I've seen liveries dogs peeing on hay bales. I wouldn't eat food another creature had urinated on, and I don't know why horses should either! Two dogs also started a fight last night. It's not safe with that many kids about I don't think!

the magic word is "supervised". There is one dog who is not constantly under his mums eye but as his manners are explemary all he does is go between her car and her stable. The rest of us whose dogs are not so well behaved keep them with us or in the car! Agree about the weeing on hay too - not pleasant. My biggest problem with younger dog is he makes a beeline for the feeds so I do need to be careful (was actually thinking of medication but accept its not nice for the horses to be sharing their food)

We don't take our dogs to the yard very often as they don't like being left if we go for a ride. And there is no way we could take them with us as one in particular would be off chasing anything and everything in sight and we could lose him.
