Those of you who are keeping your horses in because you are worried about the ground, how long do you plan to do so for - bearing in mind the general forcast, and how long it takes ground to thaw?
Mine is in because on box rest so the weather isnt really bothering me. Others are worried about getting to the main fields because it is a steep icy slope and we cant even get down it let alone the horses. They are all very happy in though and can be ridden and let out in a couple of smaller paddocks nearer the barn for a leg stretch.
I cant see them going out till it thaws though so could be in for quite some time.
I will keep my boy on restricted turn out (30 mins a day) until the ground has virtually thawed and the snow showers have gone!! The sooner the better!!
As soon as it thaws they'll be out, I hope it won't be any longer than a week as it's doing my head in, never mind my girls! At the mo all she's getting is a stretch on the lunge as the schools are to icy and rutted to even turn her out in there! Grrr! I was supposed to be moving her yesterday to a new yard-one that has an indoor school! Stupid snow!!!!
Until it thaws.... mine gets ridden/lunged and goes on the walker twice a day, everyday though so not strictly stuck in, just not allowed to hoon around as he has already injured himself once in this weather!
Until the ice has gone. We had planned to TO out today as we had loads of snow over the ice but it froze solid overnight so they stayed in. They're going on the walker every day and I try to get up in daylight to get mine out for 20 mins in hand grazing.
I turn mine out for a couple of hours or so while the snow is fresh but once it freezes over they are in 24 hours - its just too slippery - bring on spring !!!
Mine will stay in until the sheet ice with snow on top defrosts from the yard and the school defrosts enough for me to give them some form of controlled exercise before being turned out in their paddocks when it eventually thaws out completely.
Thankfully mine have lovely large airy boxes and are very relaxed and happy being in and having spent the last 18 months getting 2 of mine sound enough to come back into any form of decent work there is absolutely no way im risking them going out and breaking themselves just so they can have a few minutes play in the snow and then stand there demanding to come in. For the sake of a few days in munching hay and keeping warm im not prepared to take the risk with my horses. If my horses were at all difficult to manage/wouldn't stay in then that would be a very different matter and they would be chucked out in any conditions/weather but mine are being positively angelic in this difficult weather and im about on the yard most of the day, they are just very content, happy , obliging little horses.
Mine are stuck in and seem to be going through waves of coping and not coping. Unfortunately they are at livery so I have no control over whether they are out or not, personally I would love them to go out as the fields are only a few feet away from the stables and its not too icy at the moment - obviously I don't want them falling over on the way - their safety is clearly the most important thing. The thing I worry about most is that when they finally go out they will all gallop round and hurt themselves that way.
As far as I can gather they are going out individually in the school for a bit possibly every day or every other day.
Any ideas how to keep them occupied as the school is frozon solid so am unable to even work them in there and the hacking is treacherous so again, isn't worth trying. 21 y/o retired TB going crazy, 9 y/o TBxTrakehner not too bad although generally hates being in so don't want it to last too long, and 8 month TB also going a little bit mad - hate him being in but as said before have no control over it atm. Grrrrr.
My yard has cleared a path through the yard and gritted it to the old sand school and horses are being turned out in that in 2 groups so each gets about 5hrs out every day.
