Those with loan horses...

how many of you receive a contribution from the horse's owner, either towards keep or shoeing or insurance? Various of my friends loan and get varying assistance from £100 a month to insurance/shoeing being paid to none whatsoever and I wondered about others?
 
we have had a few loaned horse never receieved anything... we have one at the mo. which is my aunts... we dont ride it as is a bit mental... we pay £30 a week for it to sit in a feild doing nothing when she has feilds which he could sit in for free.... ridiculous!!
i think people do sometimes expect some contribution... we had a horse for loan and someone asked if we would pay for his keep (food, livery etc.) we said no....
 
I think it really varies. I am lucky enough that his owner pays all the bills, I just chip in and buy a bag of feed if we're running low, take rugs to be fixed/repaired or a pair of boots here or there. Horses for courses I guess.
 
i think your thinking more along the lines of a sharer or part loan. I've never come across a full loan horse that the owner still contributes towards.
 
we have a mare on loan but pay everything as if she was owned by us ie food,hay,farrier,teeth,vaccinations but in the loan agreement owner would pay vet bills for anything out of the ordinary. this has worked well for us for 2 years.
 
It is a weird set-up its true, I never know how to describe it as it doesn't fit nicely into either full or part loan categories

I do everything for & with him, so in that sense he is full loan, but he lives at home (with me and his owner) so there is no livery bill, he isn't shod and is out 24/7 so the only regular bills are £15 for feet every 6-8 weeks and the odd bit of feed or haylage.

If he needs shoes back on (because I'm working him more/on harder ground) I'll take over the cost of his feet, and he dentist is coming soon so I'm going to pay for his teeth.
 
When I loaned my old gelding out I only asked the girl who had him to pay for the shoes - otherwise he would have been unshod and then I wouldn't have let her ride him on the roads. I booked the farrier myself though, to make sure he was done - just told her to turn up on the day with the money.

He lived out 24/7 and I also fed him myself every day when I fed my other horse, and paid for his rent, food, wormers, jabs, replaced any tack etc., myself.
 
I have put a horse out on loan. And the lady who's got my horse pays for everything, I would never expect to pay anything towards him. She treats him as her own.
 
Our horse is loaned to us for free and they very kindly pay for vaccinations and new rugs (when needed, we pay for the rugs if we just want to spoil him!)
 
Most of the full loans that I have seen don't require the owner to pay for anything. The loanee takes on all the costs. However, if i had a horse and I loaned it to someone, I would continue to pay for the insurance myself. that way, if anything happened to the horse, and the loaner wanted to give it back, i would be covered for the vets bills.
 
I am looking for a sharer but I want my horse to stay at the same yard as my others..saying share I actually mean virtualy full loan. As I prefer her not to be moved I was looking for a contribution of £80 winter ( oct to apr) and £40 in the summer. This includes everything including lift to shows / funrides..............do you think this is fair..?
 
I have a LOU horse on loan (he came as a companion as I couldnt find one to buy and was desperate as my mare was so lonely after my other one died). Anyway the Loan horse has been here around 7 years and they have never even visited him (or phoned) let alone paid for anything! I do get an email once a year usually

He might have to go back if I can't sell my mare as there is another horse I know (and LOVE!) who is for sale and I am desperate to buy him, but havent room or time for 4. (If I can find the owners to give him back that is! lol

In the past I have loaned a horse out before, and as the owner I paid for insurance and I said I would pay for vet fees. I said this to make sure it had a vet if needed and they didn't put off getting a vet out due to them paying for it. Also I regularly paid a vist to make sure he was fit and healthy. (I even went over to clip him for them) I had a lovely loaner so all was well. When I was a kid I loaned an old pony and its owner done a runner could get hold off her, moved house, phone number didn't work, just dissapeared. So I ended up with this pony till it was 35! (now dear boy is in horse heaven due to old age)
 
When the spooky pony was still a loan pony as opposed to my pony (YAY!), the owner paid for his insurance and I paid for livery/trimmer/etc. She provided rug, saddle, headcollar, I bought bridle, grooming stuff, and other accessories.
 
I pay for everything (insurance, vets, shoes, tack, feed, field rent, etc), even new tack and repairs on the loan tack. Hattie needed a new saddle as the one she came with became too narrow so I bought TWO new ones!

I wouldn't expect the owner to pay for anything as I have taken on the keeping.
 
With my horse that I have put out on loan I pay insurance and any vets fees over £100.
I have myself loaned 2 ponies. With both of them whilst gorgeous they have been owned by people who don't insure, don't vaccinate and rarely get a farrier out so weren't in tip top nick when they arrived. My choice though and they are both lovely. I ended up buying the 1st one...only had the 2nd one a few weeks and may end up same way!
 
I have two sharers, they pay 10.00 per week and for the shoes. I pay eveything else. I also feed them so i know what they are having, and book farrier etc. Works well for me. I also have loaned and had horses on loan(now mine as bought them) and loaner has always paid for everything.
 
I've got one on loan and my Welshy is out on loan. I don't pay anything towards my Welshy, they pay for it all as that is the agreement. I don't receive anything towards my loan horse but they have said if he needed vet treatment and I had gone over my insurance limit, they would pay for it.

Good for you! I wish more people who loaned a horse realised their responsibility. Just because they havnt parted with cash to actually buy the horse many people dont give the horse what it needs, ESPECIALLY saddles. Sharing is different, costs should be shared but IMO if you loan a horse you should be responsible for paying for it.
 
I've got a horse on loan and I pay for everything as if he was my own. He came with tack and a few rugs but I paid to get the saddle reflocked and I pay for anything extra. With insurance, its still in hos owners name and I have a standing order so I pay her the exact amount every month.
 
i have put three of mine of loan, one I pay nothing for, and he's a companion, the other has basically been gifted to her loaner now, as she's getting on a bit and has a home for life with her loaner and the other is to a very good friend, i paid for his insurance up until this month but now they pay it. I will however buy him any rugs he needs as and when he needs them as these are his "things" and i wouldnt want to have to take him back and him not have everything!
 
The owner of my mare pays nothing towards her keep, although i expect if i asked she would contribute to showing costs for me.
When my other mare was out on loan i didnt contribute anything towards her keep, they used her as they wished, when they wished and treated her as their own as i do with my loan pony.
As i saw it when my mare was on loan they had use of a perfectly good mare without having too pay out £3000+ for her in the first place, yet with the one i now have on loan, if i didnt have her she would be sat in a field fat, hairy and most probably in foal and wouldnt have anything paid on her anyway!
If that makes any sense to you at all, cos i dont think i explained that very well!!
 
Mines a slightly unusual situation much like Naturallys.
Horse is effectively on full loan to me but is kept on owners premesis. I dont pay a penny towards his keep, shoes, vet, insurance etc. Just comp fees.
I do look after owners other horses when they are away which for them is much more beneficial than me paying for horses keep.
