Those with neddies out 24/7

How often do you check them?

Twice a day? Once a day? Once every 2 days?

Just curious really as it varies on our yard.

Twice a day, they usually get up to mischief overnight,so the early morning polo mint and pat is required

Once a day. Dont see the point in doing a 25 mile round trip just to give a polo and a pat.

If they had legs hanging off, YO would call.

i get to see them once a day but the girls at the yard check them in the morning and they're in full view of the yard anyway .

I am at home with my horses so I see them every day - however as I own the livery yard I insist that all DIY liveries check their horses at least once every day or I will do it and charge them for it. I had one livery customer who never checked his horse all through winter, I always turn out - he would pay me to bring in and turn up during the day to muck out and just wave to his horse from the yard. I would be asked every day what her demeanor was that morning. eventually I told him it was not acceptable and either he brought her in and checked her then or he walked up to see her every day. He was just a seriously lazyman who could not be bothered. Come summer and she was turned out 24/7 he didn't bother to come at all. I charged him full livery and he went ballistic. As far as he was concerned she did not need checking. I asked him to leave. He forgot one vital thing - he was on DIY and in his contract he had to see his horse at least once a day. I am not doing it to be awkward his horse needs to be checked. All hell can break loose in a matter of moments.

I check once a day through the week, but YO is always around and would phone if there was a problem. I'm not riding at the moment, but at weekends I'd go and ride in the morning, and do an extra visit in the evening.
It's in our livery contract to visit the horse at last once a day

Twice a day as field is rather far from yard, but I could probably do it once as the other horses in the field are also checked during the day. I'm an over protective mummy I guess. It lets me take rugs off etc and fly spray if necessary.

Twice a day every day.

It varies on our yard too - lots do twice (so actually mine get seen lots of times a day!

), some only once and there's one or two people who only check every couple of days.

It's a good yard though and all the liveries (rather than the YO who does nothing.

) keep an eye on the horses whenever they're about and will call if they think there's anything amiss.

Looks like twice a day is the norm then. I dont feel so over protective now.

I think its a good idea to have it in your contract to check your horse at least once a day - may suggest that to potential new YO to stop me getting so annoyed with those who check their horses once in a blue moon

I feed mine and hay them morning and evening - they get their rugs removed, and groomed til they're clean (yes, I do groom my field kept unbroken youngsters twice a day) unless it's chucking it down, when I lift their rugs and peer underneath them.
If I have any reason to believe one of mine is unwell, or other concerns, I'll pop back during the day, or through the night. If one colics, my OH and I take it in turns to get up and colic check overnight.

It's in my livery contract that the DIY owners must check their horses once a day. TBH, I was a bit concerned about it, as I don't always do my own - my friend, my OH and I all arrange it between ourselves to 'do' our combined four....but it's fine.
The livery yard I'm at is quite pleasant as everyone looks out for everyone else's horses...

Once a day by me but there are people going backwards and forwards to the field all the time so if anything was seriously wrong then they would notice.

There are people that don't come every day but the horses are either checked by yard or they rely on someone else noticing something is wrong and letting them know which as we are all responsible we would do.

Once a day personally, but I share the field with a nice lady who lives just a few minutes away and she pops down at least once a day too, often more. We check on each others and would call each other if we noticed anything wrong.

Yes I share with sis and we work different hours so hes not checked at the same times every day but there are also others who will keep an eye on him when they check theirs so really hes probably checked on about 5 times a day

Mine are fed, sprayed and checked twice a day - either by my YO or myself. I hate people who chuck out their horses, come up once in a blue moon and expect others to keep an eye on them - selfish and irresponsible and should not be allowed.

If I ran a livery yard, they would have to check or pay to have their horses checked daily and sign a sheet to prove they have been up.

Mine lives out with four others. I check them every Mon and Wed morning and poo pick, and I am there every lunchtime and evening. The other mornings of the week, one of the other owners check them. We all take it in turns so they are checked at least twice a day, although one of the others is never seen, so don't think she comes very often.

Its frustrating isnt it when others reply on you to check their horse for them (if not pre-organised). I had the same problem last year, one owner came up about once a month and her horse was forever throwing shoes, getting cut etc and it was the rest of us that took care of her little chap. Needles to say when I did eventually see her I had "words".

Thankfully hes now been sold on to a very loving home and is thriving by all accounts.

Twice or thrice daily. Morning (around 1/4 to 8, to feed H, check rug and weight or remove it or if no rugs then look over. Then again in the evening or afternoon, depends if they are being ridden. Short walk from home, so if it's a nice evening we go for a walk to say hello.

Mine are a home so I see them all the time, but I was a bit shocked to hear someone I know say she was leaving two in their fields for 12 days while she went on holiday as they would be fine out!

Eeek . . . I had one of my yearlings go through the fence less than half an hour after I left on Easter Monday morning. Fortunately she was found in the lane by a horsey person who put her back into the field and temporarily mended the fence and I was back two hours later (not knowing about the accident). She had shredded a front leg and spent 4 days in the equine hospital followed by 6 weeks box rest. Just imagine if she'd been left for 12 days . . . . . PTS because of infection, methinks . . . .

Once a day weekdays, if the traffic's bad it can be a 45 min round trip, not to mention the bridge toll, so checking twice a day is a bit difficult. there are other horses out with them so their owners will let us know if something terrible happens in between visits.
