It makes me really sad how senile my oldie is becoming. She is fourteen and a half now and in the last few months has really aged.

She can still run around like a loony but she also is really senile now and I think her eyesight is starting to go too :-( she is more unsettled than she used to be, and rather than wanting to be with us all the time she'll take herself off to sleep in another room. She also looses us alot, even if we're stood next to her!

Bless her, I don't think it's time just yet but I feel it's not far in the future :-(

Why do they have to get old!!!

My old girl (well not even that old at 10 1/2) , has aged a lot in the last 6 months. She is the opposite to yours in that she has to be with me when I am at home, she lies at my feet constantly, and just behind me when I am washing up etc, I trip over her frequently.:p She has failing sight and her hearing is going too, so I keep her on lead anywhere away from home. Asyou say it is horrible when the get old.:(

14 - that is disgusting! I do know what you mean about loving oldies despite the heartache. Buffy is so funny with her senile behaviour, she is just like that poem about the naughty old lady wearing purple. She has no manners at all, pushes her way past us, steals food etc, and gets away with it all.:p

Well we had a phone call today from pub that will walked into the garden, I dont know how the hell he got out. He's 15 v arthritic and one of the most stubbon dogs u have known! The pub is only over the road and several local dogs head that way when they get out. And the sod blanked me when I went over just layed behind the bar ! But I love older dogs so much character. I've not had him long but wouldn't want to change him. Even if i have let him on the sofa and is now snoring in my ear

I can second the use of vivatonin, my 14 year old lurcher has been given a new lease of life with this drug.

My Leo is 13 now and starting to go a bit senile. He's got quite clingy, and sometimes just wanders around and won't settle. I've not heard of vivatonin - am off to look it up.

I am reluctant to use vivatonin for Buffy, its a bit complicated but vets believe her sight problem could be caused by some sort of problem in her brain, don't really want to increase blood flow in case it is some sort of tumour and this would cause it to grow. Have used it on other oldies with very good results though.

You could try Aktivait for dementia.

Unfortunately I lost my old boy just over a week ago, he was nearly 16, I still have a boy nearly 13 and a girl nearly 10, all BC's.

My old girl was just like that, although really sad, she used to keep me amused as she walked into parked cars on the drive!
Bless her :(

Aww, it makes me really sad to see our dog showing his age. He is 14 now and, although I wouldn't say senile at all, he is losing his hearing (although he has always had rather selective hearing anyway!) and he is not as stable on his hind limbs as he used to be. His eyes are getting that bluey hue - although he can spot a cat in the neighbours garden across the road fine!

He is still lively on occasion, likes his walks and dipping in the water and likes to play with his pal so hopefully he has a few more years left yet. It's sad to think of him not being around though - I dread that day.

My biggest fear with Will is making a decision for him. He doesn't really feel mine because of his age and knowing he spent all his life with some one else he feels borrowed if that makes sense. I really hope I just find him asleep one day but know that prob won't be the reality.
