Should have money soon to get my box, I want to get a VW, obv one that is reliable and safe. So for those that have one that is a reliable, safe but old runner, what sort of prices did you pay for yours? There is such a wide range of prices for those advertised! Thanks! X

I had a j reg vw LT35 diesel with an Ifor Williams container back. I sold it 3 years ago for £3950 which was virtually what I paid for it 3 years previously. I sold it the day after advertising it for the asking price and had phonecalls for ages. Think I could have got rather more for it.
It is difficult to price them, I think its just luck if you find a 'cheap one'.
Btw it never let me down and was very easy to drive, but not the fastest!!

Thanks! I'm just trying to budget how much for the box but its hard as some are for sale at £2k and some at £7k and everything in between! I have seen on here some people got theirs relatively cheaply, but its a case of wanting to know if that is the exception rather than the norm!!

I have seen some advertised that have not been the next day and some advertised for weeks and weeks!

I paid £1000 for mine but had to spend £1500 on it, which I knew I would need to when I bought it.
Just get someone to have a good look at before you buy it; just because it has an MOT doesn't mean its ok!

What sort of things did you have to repair Foxy1? The most important things for me are a safe floor/ramp obviously, and something reliable although I wouldn't mind needing to perhaps fix a couple of bits and bobs.

Complete re-wiring all electrics, new brake pipes and shoes and discs, new load compensater, new heavy duty springs, overhaul of engine inc. new carb, and a whole load of welding on the chassis...... I think that's it!

I would rather do it this way around though because I know the lorry is sound for many years to come.

Lorry now starts first time every time and I know everything has been checked, repaired if needed, and is 100% safe for my horses.

Just to add this lorry had 9 months MOT!

I have a lt35 with a ifor williams back on a L plate. I paid £2,200 and only because the lady who was selling it, had awful money probs. I spent nearly £500 on glow plugs, fuel pump part and various little things and it now starts first time. Must warn you they are very slow!

Slow? Mine easily does 60 on the motorway and I wouldn't go faster than this with a horse on board anyway.

Could be because I've virtually rebuilt the engine though!

The gear linkages are prone to giving trouble. They are however a good little lorry,if they have been looked after.

Well slow is better than no transport at all!! Whenever I have hired a box I haven't gone faster than 60 on the m-way anyway so I wouldn't mind at all!

Sorry another question, when the box is looked over prior to purchase, do they advise on what would need doing? I'd assume they would....!? As Foxy1 says, if you do the work yourself at least you know its sorted for years to come (hopefully!). I've not started looking at any yet so am at this stage open to different options.
