Planning on backing my D late next summer, he's currently 2yrs7 months - he will be 3 in the May and hopefully chunked up more by say Aug/sept. He is currently standing at around 14.3/15hh but is quite weedy!! He does however have chunky knees and hocks and am hoping he will *fill these out* his sire is 14.3hh and quite chunky and qualified for HOYS, his dam is a bit finer and stands at 14.2HH, so I don't think he will grow too much more height wise. So long as he fills out he should be a good size to take up my long legs!!
What do you think?
I will be after a dressage saddle for him, this is the route i want to go down - something adjustable such as a wintec and am quite liking the Isabell werth saddle. I have a LW synthetic for backing him in which i will use first for long-reining etc
I am 5ft10, slim, size 10 (or hoping to still be after i have popped the baby out :o)
He is quite short-backed - am thinking a 17" would be suffice.....

What dressage saddle do you have your D in and what size seat is it?
Pics would be good, thanks :)

This was after a long reining session in the autumn: (he's very inquisitive and nosey!!)

He looks like he does still have some height to grow as he needs to grow into those legs! I expect he will go up a few inches.

My welsh d x is super wide (he has a welsh body) and the only synthetic we could possibly get away with was a thorowgood cob.
I have him in made to measure Harry dabbs dressage as nothing else would stay put on his back. I bought it when he was 4 1/2 and still fits him now at nearly 6.

Genie - 15hh Welsh D, modelling a 17.5" Wintec Pro - not the Isabell Werth one though.

And a pic of me riding her in it.

And a not very good pic of her new saddle which is a 17" Ideal H&C Cut, not that you can see this as I'm in the way!!

My D x isn't overly chunky but has been in a wintec isabell which I loved but didn't quite fit him. Also tried both the old Andrew style wintec 500 dressage saddles on him and neither fit his massive shoulders. Then had him in a ideal/fylde Jessica which fit quite well but ended up too wide and I now have him in a equipe emporio dressage saddle which we both love :)

Shadow is in a 17 inch, wide Ideal Jessica. He's 15.1 ish.
I certainly don't need anything bigger but saddler has always said we wouldn't be able to get away with anything bigger than 17 inch.

Hello,

I had such saddle woes with my welsh PB she is now 6 and we've been through 6 saddles! :-( I never had much luck with the synthetics on the market, we came closest with the thorowgood cob but still not ideal! I quite liked the saddle company dressage saddle and they are adjustable by a saddle company fitter, this is her as a 5 yr old in the saddle company dressage:-

After struggling to keep up with her ever changing shape my friend lent me her heather moffett saddle and it was great so we have one of those now and it's fab!

I have just purchased an Isabell Werth Saddle from a woman who used it on her Welsh D, the seat is 17'' and I believe the horse was approx 14.2hh.

hi my 14"2 welsh is ridden in a 17" isabell worth ,he is quite long in the back though
i'm 5"6 with long legs and i find it comfy enough although i don't feel like i have enough horse under me ,i feel like i need to lift my heel to press the "buttons" :)

there are some ridden pic's of him somewhere in my older post ,he's the bay :)

He's lovely by the way:)

I have a welsh d x warmblood, she is 16.1hh also short backed and I have a GP Wintec for every day. When I started looking for dressage saddle I found it difficult as she has quite big shoulders. I first bought a saddle co. Dressage saddle then last year my hubby bought me the Albion Platinum Royale Dressgae Saddle 17". It fits her perfectly and I love it.

I have wintec isabell werth on my 15.1 welsh d mare who is chunky. Her jump/hacking saddle is a Kent and masters cob GP and have to say prefer deep seat of the IW.

I love my Bates Caprilli dressage saddle. Although it is actually my TB mares I use it on my 15 hand chunky Sec D and it fits him fine. Both horses are in the same gullet size of medium wide which makes it v handy. Its a 16.5 inch which suits us all v well :)

I have ridden myloubylou's mare in her Isabella werth dressage saddle and it is one of the most comfortable saddles I have ever ridden in and I think it improves position of the rider too!

Thanks guys :) am hoping he is going to be easier to saddle than my XXX wide cob!! shes in a thorowgood with an XX wide plate - last time she was ridden in it it needed checking as it didn't seem right - that was back in the early summer and shes grown and filled again since then. However, he is not as wide (atm!!)

Its good to think that he has a bit of growing to do yet - in no rush as have my soon to be 5yr old to bring back into work this spring :)

He just moves so lovely and has a real presence about him - am hoping he will be my horse of a life-time and not be too small!!

Mine is in an Ideal Jessica dressage, 17"

I have tried all sorts of saddles over the years and due to the size of her shoulder only dressage or WH saddles tend to fit, and always had 17" or smaller

Can't help with the dressage aspect but my gelding is just over 15.1hh and takes a 17.5". I do wonder if he could take an 18" but I don't need it so have never tried. He's quite short in the back too, would fit in 6' rugs if it weren't for his shoulders.

Height wise, I don't feel to big for my boy, but I feel like I look too big which is silly! I'm 5'7" and he takes a 48" girth so he's not a small boy, but I ride quite long I think.

I meant to also say that mine is 14.1hh and I am 5'4" but I have long legs (longer than my OH!)
