My mare has discovered that if she leans back on the lead rope she breaks free.

Its not a panic thing she just does it when she gets fed up. I've tried not useing bailer twine and she snapped the lead rope! Any ideas anyone?

Try using an inner tube from a bike instead of bailer twine, it has lots of give in it so will stretch without breaking. Once your mare realises it doesnt break she will stop doing it and maybe you can go back to bailer twine.
Just a thought: I guess you could always tie some bailer twine to the innertube rather than tying her straight to the tube, I doubt it will break if she pulls it due to the stretch in the tube.

hope this helps

Nylon rope halters, nothing to break, but better to use the bungee method first as if they pull back on something solid they can pull muscles.

You could also try tying two ropes to two bits of string, one rope much longer than the other, so when she pulls back and breaks the first (with the shorter rope), she's still tied up to the second string.

knew of one that did this and the owner used a rope that slid through the bailer twine, gave the mare such a shock she sat down..... she was so embarrest that she never did it again

Good idea. Will try the inner tube. Hopefully she will realise its not going to snap and give in. She has a heart of gold but a will of iron!

Snap! This is my mare's only hang-up - she's a little git sometimes cos she just decides she doesn't like something (like hosepipe, or water bucket being dragged past her) then leans on it til it goes with a look on her face "i'm gonna break it!"

Another suggestion I heard was to get a heavy cotton lead-rope and just thread it through the baler twine because horse thinks it is tied up but if it does pull back, the rope just runs through. Obviously, you need to be within arms length of horsey at all times and I would never do this at a show!

Pickle did that when he realised even a small lean would allow him to go and have some grass! We used a trailer bungee tie, worked really well and they do break in panic situations.

Is she grey, by any chance?!!!!!

one of my ponies has learnt that if he jerks his head in a cartain way that he breaks the bailer twine. Unfortunately when that doesnt work he pulls the knot apart with his teeth and then wanders off!

mine just unties them if im not watching him, also tries undoing his door chain when he thinks i cant see.
he also can undo bolts, field gates, and if mum used to tie him to the ring near the tap he'd fiddle with it and flooded the barn while mum was mucking out
