I have just had the biggest scare of my life!! My husband went out to check the horses water and came racing back in with a look of sheer panic on his face! He shouted that Lisa, my big skewbald mare was down in the snow. The other horses were all standing in a circle round her and she was just lying there all stiff with her legs sticking up in the air! We really thought she was dead and raced over to her, my poor hubby shouting to her. Then she moved, thank god. She must have got down to roll but has chosen possibly the deepest snow in the field! Plus she is also in foal so she just couldn't get back up. Took my hubby pushing and me pulling to get her to stand, but thank god she is ok. I have never been so worried in all my life! She seems ok tho, just tired so have put her to bed with some hay. Silly mare. God, my heart is still thumping!!

Gosh that must have been a fright!!!

I know exactly how you feel, and it heart stopping! A few years ago ,our mare had been in for a few days, put her out in the paddock and she turned herself inside out bucking and leaping around. She then jumped about 5 foot up in the air and didnt bother putting the landing gear out, just collapsed on her sideand stayed there. OH and I stared at eachother mouths open thinking she had had a heart attack and had dropped dead. Made our way accross to her and she jumped up, shook and trotted off with a look on her face as much to say I ment to do that! Think she had winded herself. Hasnt done anything like it since thank goodness.

Pleased your girl is ok,they do like to scare us and keep us on our toes dont they?

Unfortunatly this happened to me with a pony I had on loan, only the pony was actually dead. We never found the reason why, he must have just dropped dead during the night.

Inca lies in the field, whatever the weather, and plays dead... just to wind us up I think. You can get within about 6ft of her shouting her name, clapping your hands, jumping around to see if she's alive and she just doesn't budge. Then when you get right up close she just looks up at you like "hah, I was just resting!".

Charliemouse - God, that's horrible. What a shame.

I don't think I would have been so worried if she hadn't looked so stiff! Her legs were sticking straight out like rigor mortis had set in!!! Silly beast!!!

I dread to think! She's 8mths pregnant so I suppose some serious damage could have been done. Iam keeping an eye on her in her stable at the mo but she seems to be none the worse. Bet she sleeps well.

My pregnant mare has just done the same thing - neighbours called to say Donks was down in the field (well they said Buck) and could not get him up I turned into a basket case - as I arrived home realised it was Donks, shouted her name she got up was dazed or winded but has come round - vet came and checked her over and thinks she should be fine, most horrible feeling

How frightening that must have been! Glad she's OK. There's a warning on HG forum about in-foal mares getting cast in the snow so must not be that unusual even though I'd never heard of it myself!

So glad to hear your mare is OK.

Unfortunately, like Charliemouse, a couple of years ago I found my three year old filly dead in the field in the morning. It's a horrible experience.

I used to have an Andalusian who thought it was hilarious to play dead and then to see Mummy's reaction! He got me several times until I cottoned on.

He wouldn't move an inch until I was right next to him and then he would lift his head and laugh at me.
