After leaving the stables last night we ordered in a pizza. While eating it with my fingers I kept tasting something odd, a kind of chemical taste. It was some time later that I realised that prior to leaving the yard I had sprayed the field shelter with Ant-bite spray and had obviously sprayed my hands in the process! Was a bit disappointed it didn’t taste worse ?

This is the real reason for washing your hands before eating.

Last summer I put some anti crib gel on one horse's fly rug to stop the other biting it, only on the bits the wearer wouldn't reach with his teeth. A couple of days later I was brushing the horse and got a horrible taste, the rain had washed the gel through the rug onto the horse and the brush was lifting it into the air.

When I was little, my mum used to paint awful tasting stuff on my nails to stop me biting them. After a while I just got used to the taste and carried on anyway. I think that's why I like quite bitter tastes now!

I remember old wives tales about painting bitter aloe extract onto fingers to stop nail-biting or onto thumbs to stop thumb-sucking.

Putting boxing gloves on your infant works just as well.
