Thoughts/comments/experience on "dishing" please.

a friends horse dishes, it gets worse when he in unfit, but it doesnt stop him from doing anything he floats very well.....he cant jump that high tho as he also had bowed tendons but he doesnt know that:rolleyes:

My girly dishes slightly when unfit and not working through from behind. Once she is straight and tracking up it stops

My girl also dishes when unfit (or excited/pratting about). It doesn't always mean that there's anything wrong with them, its just the way many of them move.
I wouldn't say it can be "cured", but most horses stop doing it when fit, and I definitely wouldn't call it bad, unless I thought there was a conformation/ medical issue causing it.

It depends where the dishing 'comes from', as there is often a conformational basis. Of course some breeds, such as the PRE, are much more prone to dishing than others.

It's not a good thing, but it won't necessarily have long term implications either :)

If the flight of the limb doesn't affect theplacement of the foot, then I wouldn't be too concerned.

IME it can't be 'cured' but sometimes improving the farriery can help it appear less.

I have a 20 year old who dishes with one fore, and its never caused her a moments bother.

Thanks we're only happy hacks I'm just worried it ment he could be putting extra strain on the rest if his body to compensate for this motion

I would check the shoeing and muscular structure of the horse as well. I have seen badly dishing horses become a lot straighter with correct shoeing, another reduced it as he grew up and stronger

I would look closely to see what is causing it and then to check it is t causing undue pressure elsewhere

.

This is my opinion, if it dishes and the hoof lands square and doesn't move, no problem, if it lands wonkey or twists as the weight moves through it then you have a worse problem (one horse I went to look at had the twist and despite being great in every other way I discounted him as he was a heavy set horse and carrying extra weight through imperfect joints is not the best)
