This happened over the weekend, but I haven't posted before as I didn't really know the full details until now.

3 mares were in a field owned by the YO. 2 are brood mares, both in foal, and the other was a livery that has had some back problems and was turned out for a couple of weeks before being brought back into work. On Fri afternoon, YO went in to check on them, and one of the pregnant mares was showing severe colic symptoms. Vet was called and the mare was admitted to hospital. YO went back later and a 2nd mare was down in the field. (The mare with the back problem). Vet came back and everything was done to try and help the mare, but sadly she died in the field. Some form of poisoning is suspected. Vet decided to get the 3rd horse out of the field and into hospital just in case as she was showing no signs of ill effects. It was now well into the early hours of Saturday morning and was freezing cold and icy. As they were loading the mare onto the lorry, she slipped and went off the side of the ramp and got her leg caught. She has really badly cut her leg and smashed up her face. She has over 50 stitches in her back leg. She was monitored all over the weekend at the hospital, and showed no signs of the poisoning, so was allowed to come home yesterday.

Sadly the other pregnant mare that was admitted to hospital first, died on sunday morning. A post mortem was carried out on the first mare that died, but didn't show up anything. They are still waiting for bloods to come back and hopefully they will show something.

At the moment, vet is at a loss as to what has caused this. Horses in neighbouring fields all seem fine. Has anyone on here heard or known anything like this?

Some healing vibes for the poor mare with the cuts legs please. We don't yet whether she has lost the foal or not.

How terrible. Can't offer any ideas what has caused this but sending loads of healing vibes to the mare with the injured leg, anad hugs to the owners of the 2 mares that died.

Haven't seen the owners of the 2 mares that died, TBH, I don't know what I would say. YO owns the mare with injured leg, and she is devastated as you can imagine with all that has gone on.

What a shocking story - I just posted last night about losing my three horses in three months - but all that in one weekend is terrible. I really hope the surviving horse makes a speedy recovery.

How awful, you always think that your having bad luck, but this is truly sad and all my thoughts go to the owner and the poor yard owner.

Impossible to give any ideas on what it could have been, it is incredibly freak tho - could a passer by have given them anything? Grass cuttings thrown in field?

Please let us know the outcome of the blood tests - your poor YO must be devestated

Lots of healing vibes to the surviving mare & lots of (((hugs))) to everyone involved.
I'm also in Essex & my horse has been in the vets.
I think one of the mares was in the next door stable to him.
If it is her, I saw her on Saturday attached to all her drips & went to say hello. I was sad to see she wasn't there when I went back in on Sunday.
All my thoughts are with you all. x.

What a terrible weekend, thoughts for those who have lost their horses. Do hope the other mare makes a full recovery and that the foal is ok.

Is your horse ok quarrybank?

Poor Spider has had a very bad year, but he's back home thankfully - I picked him up yesterday. All I can now do, is keep everything crossed that it doesn't reoccur.

However I have to say, the vets have been fantastic with him.
Full reports are in veterinary section.

Any possibility that some idiot threw some yew clippings etc in the field?

Such a terrible thing to happen and I do hope the mare and her foal are safe and sound long term.

Now cannot wait to get up the yard to give my big lads a hug and make sure they are ok.
