This happened over the weekend, but I haven't posted before as I didn't really know the full details until now.
3 mares were in a field owned by the YO. 2 are brood mares, both in foal, and the other was a livery that has had some back problems and was turned out for a couple of weeks before being brought back into work. On Fri afternoon, YO went in to check on them, and one of the pregnant mares was showing severe colic symptoms. Vet was called and the mare was admitted to hospital. YO went back later and a 2nd mare was down in the field. (The mare with the back problem). Vet came back and everything was done to try and help the mare, but sadly she died in the field. Some form of poisoning is suspected. Vet decided to get the 3rd horse out of the field and into hospital just in case as she was showing no signs of ill effects. It was now well into the early hours of Saturday morning and was freezing cold and icy. As they were loading the mare onto the lorry, she slipped and went off the side of the ramp and got her leg caught. She has really badly cut her leg and smashed up her face. She has over 50 stitches in her back leg. She was monitored all over the weekend at the hospital, and showed no signs of the poisoning, so was allowed to come home yesterday.
Sadly the other pregnant mare that was admitted to hospital first, died on sunday morning. A post mortem was carried out on the first mare that died, but didn't show up anything. They are still waiting for bloods to come back and hopefully they will show something.
At the moment, vet is at a loss as to what has caused this. Horses in neighbouring fields all seem fine. Has anyone on here heard or known anything like this?
Some healing vibes for the poor mare with the cuts legs please. We don't yet whether she has lost the foal or not.
