My mare Septre injured her tendon in November (we think she kicked out at another horse and got the fence post instead). At the moment it is not sure if she can be ridden again and she is only 14 so I have been thinking about putting her in foal.

We (me and my mum) bred her ourselves from Gypsy (roan-ish one in my sig) and as we nearly lost her this year, I'd like to carry on the line.

The foal would be for me to keep- no intention of selling at all. But do you think Septre would be good to breed from? She is Arab x cob (part welsh we think) nd I was thinking of putting her to a warmblood or TBx (something MW)

I know that she looks like a tub of lard- photo taken in August and she is thinner now. Please be honest- if you say you wouldn't touch her with a bargepole then I really dont mind.

She looks a nice sort, probably looks nicely proportioned when she is slimmer!!!! I think I'd be putting her to something with a bit more substance than she has. How big is she? You may get quite a hot head with a TB/Arab/Welsh mix!!!

She is 15.1hh and when not fat she is a light-mid weight I would say.

Just found a couple of slightly less lardy photo (she doesn't like having her photo taken!)

Now that bottom pic is much better!
I take it your mare has a good temperment cos if she hasn't I wouldn't think about it at all unless she has so much ability at something, else you could just be making trouble for yourself
What would you want to do with the foal (apart from keep it!) how big do you want to go, and whereabouts are you for a start?

If you don't want to go too big, what about a Connemara? They're usually good all rounders with sane personalities. I personally wouldn't go down the Arab route, same as someone else said, could be you'd end up sitting on a powder keg but then I'm not a fan of pure Arabs!
Again, if you want to stay smallish, there are no end of lovely graded stallions with the Sports Pony Stud Book; there's bound to be something you'd like from that! I'm using Ambrey Chester next year on Twiggy, he's producing some nice stock with good temperments that can do jobs.
Alternatively, you could go heavier and something like an Irish Draught or an ID x TB.
Then again, you could go for a Trakhener which will give you size and quality, no bad thing to use for most mares.
I certainly don't see why you shouldn't breed from her especially as you plan to keep the foal anyway.

She's quite similar to mine...

15hh, 14 years old, bred from my old 14.2 pony!!!!

I'm looking at either a trakehner or a pure arab... I'm quite happy with the 3/4 TB 1/4 welsh Asti, and adding arab doesn't worry me at all! Hoping that I can breed something of a similar height or slightly bigger, I don't want anything mahoosive.

There are some stunning trakehners about though, would make a very nice cross, how about this fellah? Too far for me which is a shame as he's absolutely stunning!

As long as she has a nice temperament and the stallion you choose has one as well, you should have a nice foal for yourself. She looks a very good sort of mare - start husband hunting!

Thanks everyone!

I am looking to breed something a little bigger (about 16hh ish) and maybe with a bit more bone. Septre does have a very good temperment although she does have the occasional hissy fit when she cant get her own way.

Gypsy has a lovely temperment- the only problems she has are man-made (head-shy and likes to go fast) so hopefully wont be passed on.

I would like too use the foal for dressage/jumping/eventing a little bit of everything really. Depends on how they turn out.

Your mare is lovely Gingermare. That stallion is nice too.

Two possible husbands I have seen are Icon and Dexter's Puzzle. I'm bound to end up with about 10 stallions that I like though LOL.

there is no reason why you shouldn't try to breed from your mare, although my personal opinion (and it is just my opinion) is that she is getting a bit old for a first foal. the secret to successful breeding is to go for a fairly small adjustment..so ideally you should be looking for something a couple of inches taller, maybe with a bit more bone, but physically as close as possible..obviously looking to address any slight faults in conformation you want to address - not to suggest that your girl has, more of a general principle.

Be prepared for disappointment - she may just not take

She isn't too old to have a foal at all. As long as she is healthy and has a good temperament then go for it.

Remember its going to cost a lot especially if things don't go right, as i've experienced last year. I've got 2 mares in-foal for the first time and its cost over £2,000 so far!

Dexter's Puzzle is nice but i know someone who has a 2006 filly and TBH im not that impressed and she is out of a stunning mare as well.

If you're looking for a WB my 2 are in-foal to Goshka Ringo, quite a few members on the forum really really like him, plus if you like coloureds he throws 100% coloured progeny.

Goshka Ringo

Good Luck, let us know what you decide!!!

Thanks the_watcher. I know she is getting on a bit to be a mum which is why I'd like to put her in foal this year if possible. Gypsy was 13 when she had Septre and another mare who bred Septre's half brother the year before was 18! Think she had to be covered several times to take. Mind you Septre would be more than happy with that- she is such a tart LOL.

oooh to many to choose from LOL.

I've heard of Goshka Ringo, did realise how stuning he was though. Have to admit a coloured foal would be lovely. Or maybe a palamino.

Think I've been swayed to Goshka Ringo or Treliver Decanter now. Hmmm maybe she can have 2 foals. One for next year and one for a couple of years after that.

Meant to say I know it will cost a fair amount- I brought Amber already in foal and she has cost enought to feed etc. I think having a foal is worth it though. My hubby would disagree though!
