Looking for a family sort to suit everyone from 7yr old through 13 yr old to me (5'4" just under 9 stone). Already have 11'2" lead rein and also looking for a chunky 14'2" but thought that this would 'fit in the middle'. My first pony was a 13'2" exmoor cross and my mother rode him quite happily and she's about the same proportions as me. I'm not ageist as have a 34yr old mare still in work so the age doesn't worry me. In fact it's a positive as I'm no good at getting rid of them so wouldn't want something too young at this size to stand around doing nothing. I see it as being big enough that if I want to go for a hack with older son/friend we can take the 14'2" and this, but small enough that my younger son can move on to it from the lead rein. Your wise and un-prejudiced thoughts would be welcome!
 
He sounds really lovely - but the price did suprise me - I know its with full wardrobe and tack but that sounds quite a lot?

Thanks for your comment - much appreciated. I wrongly or rightly paid £2k for our sec A lead rein (then 8) 10 years ago, with not even a headcollar. I was assured he was safe and sane off the lead rein as well. My son was 3 so on the lead rein. I saw the daughter ride him - he was perfect. I rode him - he was perfect. When my son came off the lead rein 3 years later he was a little s0d and has been with loads of other kids. He is lovely, well put together and I would trust him with anyone on the ground and on the lead rein, but put a small jockey on him off the lead rein and he turns into a devil! I may be disillusioned, but I didn't think the price was too high including tack etc. Am I really that gullible? Am very happy to be put right (as will my non horsey husband as he only sees horses as a liability!).
 
Have a look at sites like horsequest/H&H to try to get a feel for pricing - The age doesn't bother me at all as I would think a pony like that should keep going for a while! but if you have an idea, then ask what is included in the wardrobe/tack and then you can assess if the price is right.

Thanks Luci - will do. And you are right about checking what is included - could be a tatty saddle, falling apart bridle and manky rug or could be the whole caboodle!!
 
I dont think he's expensive if he is as described + the tack on top.

What price can you put on a child's safety and as previously said, if generally healthy he should have a fair few years ahead of him.You would however be lucky to get anything for him if you decided to sell in a few years time probably.

The Sec A does not surprise me :) . Lead rein paragon of virtue does not always equal first ridden and those that do are very hard to find :)

All I can say is that you live and learn!! That said, I still love him to bits but once younger son comes off the lead rein he will really just become a pet/companion/lawnmower as I wouldn't want to pass him on.

When I was looking at weanlings I bought the first one I saw, I really wanted her Mum too (but she wasn't for sale :( ) and she's so good that I'd buy another from the same breeder with no hesitation. Sometimes luck is on your side and the first one is the right one. :)
 
Definitely worth looking - the grin on that rider's face says it all. However I do think a touch over priced for his age - we bought a similar aged 19, admittedly in winter and via friends for a lot less, who had as an 18 year old been originally advertised in the spring at about £1200 including tack, rugs etc, and hadn't sold. Do you know how long he's been on the market?

Only on the market a few days and I would certainly be 'making an offer' if he seems right. I am a 'keeper' with horses and would like to think that is a good bargaining tool for much loved family ponies. You don't fancy coming pony shopping with me tomorrow do you? I am at the other end of the county and he is in the middle!! :D:D:D
 
He could be way overpriced or the bargain of the century. The age wouldn't put me off if you can get recent references from the PC.

However he can't be Exmoor x Arab - that cross cannot give a roan - so how far back does his documentation go?

Thanks for your reponse. I'm not sure how far his documentation goes back. But for me this doesn't matter as I am looking for a family pony for the kids to enjoy not a world beater. Just looking for a general thought on whether this seems a genuine pony with reasonable conformation. Thank you. :)

And thanks for the point on PC - they say he has PC camped so will try to find out which PC he has been with and will try to get references.
