My girl is shod but doesn't do any roadwork anymore, however, in her younger years she was trotted on the road quite regularly as there wasn't always anywhere else to exercise.

Now I'm thinking about taking her barefoot when the ground softens and seeing if she can stay barefoot next summer, I've been looking into the whole barefoot thing and came across this video and the equivalent barefoot video on the right of the screen.

Would this put you off trotting on the road work or is everyone aware of this concussion casued by trotting on the road or is this video misleading? I'm not really sure either way!

I think it's misleading, it would interesting to see the same angle & clip of horse on road barefoot, & barefoot & shod on normal grass/dirt.
Pastern just looks like it's doing it's job to me.

dont know, but we exercise and school regularly while hacking! and do alot of road work in trot and it has done more good than bad.

TBH i don't really ride on roads but generally walk on them apart from to get out of the way when I'm holding up traffic. I'm not sure whether the video is misleading or not. Are you planning on riding on the roads again?

This sort of 'Natural is best' blinkered propoganda annoys me. At the end of the day there is nothing to say that 1st pic wasn't engineered to look worse than it could,i.e, trotting too fast and allowing the horse to go on it's forehand, inwhich case, yes trotting on the roads in that style is certainly not good for their legs.

There is nothing wrong with trotting on a road for a bit if it's done with consideration to the horse and there is nothing wrong with putting shoes on your horse

I was interested to see the shock action going through the pastern up to the fetlock. But it appears ot be shot at a slightly different angle, I don't know much about filming so I'm not sure if that could cause it to look different?

Helen - my girl was trotted on roads for 10 years + and she is none the worse for it as far as the vet can tell!

RR - I don't ride on the roads as she's a little fickle with traffic and since I can avoid it I do. We may have to ride a few stoney tracks on certain hacks so I would be investing in hoof boots for those occassions.

I think the chesnut has more feather aswell and there is more movement before it foot even touches the floor. A fair test would be to take all feathers off and shot both videos from the same angle with the same horse.

My thoughts exactly....2 different horses, with different ways of going and differing amounts of feather....the only properly scientific way to do this would to have same horse shod and unshod.....different horses only increase the variables...

...actually, if you video'd me running down the road naked there would be a fair amount of aftershock and wobble....but ive been running around ( not necessarily naked) for 38 years now, fully functioning as well.

Sorry but not comparative at all
(if thats a word)! The shod one was on tarmac and the unshod in a sandschool at a distance! I think very few people would argue that the unshod hoof is better for absorbing the concussion aspect but in an ideal world tarmac and eternal grass going is non achievable (unless you live in the wild west)! It's all about making the best decisions according to your horse and what you do. xx
