Thoughts on two bitches together? (GSD)

Hi All

My OH has a two year old black and tan GSD bitch, and I have just been offered a 18mth old white GSD bitch that needs rehoming (no issues with the dog, just down to family circumstances).

Both have very good natures, but I have a reservation about keeping two bitches of similar ages together.

Any thoughts/opinions or experiences would be gratefully received!

Many thanks,

Katie

I felt the same when I was looking for a second dog (I already had a JRT bitch) however at the rescue I ended up bringing Suzy a lurcher bitch home (the rescue has fantastic trainers etc that assessed both dogs and I spent 4 hours there introducing them before making the decision) now they are inseparable and never have any trouble together.

I don't know much about the GSDs others will, but I've not had any problem with my two girls being together! Mille was 1 year old and Suzy guessed at 18 months - 2 years old, so very similar in age.

i know many bitches that live in harmony with one another (not gsd's though) AND know that my bitch cannot be within ten feet of another without dominating it... so i reckon that it could go either way, depending on the temperament of the dogs in question.

good luck. ;) x

You won't know until you try a careful introduction. Take it slowly, avoid face to face introductions, Try walking beside each other on leads to start with. Let us know how you get on.

As others, depends on the dogs and you won't know until they meet. We've had fights keeping GSD bitches together, friends have had bitches together for years with no problems :)

I know people say you shouldnt have same sex dogs living in a household but my 2 dogs who are brother & sister play hard and sometimes it ramps up into a fight. If I step in because its getting a bit serious and its always the bitch who wont give up they shut up after a few choice words from me.

Iused to have 2 Lancashire Heeler bitches who were bought as puppies only 2weeks difference in age and they would have the occasional set to but one used to back down and then it was all forgotten and they would be fine.

I also used to have a entire male Dobermann of 9yrs of age living with a neutered 18month Dobe and they never had a cross word, they used to play fight but it never escalated but the entire male was top dog but never felt the need to come over aggressive.

I think this proves there are no hard and fast rules and every dog is very individual and as long as you are careful in your introductions and dont force them together you hopefully wont get any problems.

I have four borzoi bitches living together of various ages. It all boils down to the animals temperament and how you are seen by the "pack" If both girls have good temperaments and respect you there should be no reason why their should be any problems.

ive got a lurcher and when she was 3 i decided to get another dog, i decided ona collie cross and went with the fixed idea of getting a dog as i had been told not to have 2 bitches, anyway the only bitch in the litter chose me ....(although this is different to your case as it was introducing a puppy to an adult ) but ive not had any problems and the lurcher is now 8 and the collie cross is 5....

I have two bullmastiff girls and they get on really well together. Both are extremely laid back and loving so similar personalities.

They were rescues so didn't know each other at all.

We've just introduced a 12 month old rescue GSD to a 9 year old admittedly occasionally grumpy Golden Retriever - had the odd few problems at first, but now they are absolutely fine unless Goldie is tired or just not in the mood!!
Good luck and let us know how you get on
