I’m interested in buying a 16.1hh, black, 5 year old trakehner mare for £2,500.

She has a lump that is:
- approx. 5cm by 2.5cm
- with a 2.5cm by 2mm scar over it (skin healed nicely)
- raised about 1cm from the rest of her leg
- near the front of the inside of her cannon bone on her near hind
- about 5cm below the hock joint
- feels ‘fleshy’ under the hair (not ‘fluidy’ or ‘boney’!

She does seem a little sensitive about it but she is only 5 so not that used to being poked and prodded! She does not look lame on the leg at all.

Her current owner said that she got her leg caught on some electric fencing wire in the winter. She said that she had it checked by a vet at the time and he had said that it shouldn’t cause any problems in the future.

I suppose my question is; would a lump in that area possibly cause any lameness as her workload increases (she is currently just turned out in a field). Or would it just be the superficial/cosmetic look of it that would remain with her?

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Agreed, please get her vetted before you buy. A vet will advise as to what effect it could have, esp with regard to her workload / future.
Very difficult for anyone really to advise without seeing the horse / lump.

If she'll give permission, will the owner let her vet speak to you about the injury and his prognosis? May be easiest way to find out whether or not you want to proceed with a vetting by your own vet.

Agree with this, then give your own vet a ring and see if the opinions are similar once you have the necessary info.

That's a great idea thank you.

I will absolutely have her vetted but I just wanted to find out if it was a definite no no before spending a few hundred pounds!!

I can only have a 2 stage vetting as she is not in work. She was broken in at the end of last summer and has been out in a field since then to mature.

Has anyone else got any opinions or experiences with these types of lumps in that general area!?

If spending them kind of pennies do get a vetting.
My youngster took a kick in the field as a 2yr old causing a small 1.5" gash in her back cannon, she was sound as a pound but being middle of fly season and being turned out 24x7 she did get a nasty infection by time i found her in the morning. She was never lame and had treated by vet but she has a lump still 2yr later where it was vets checked again and are happy it is jsut scar tissue as the wound healed it caused a fibrous lump on her cannon it does not affect her in anyway there is no weakness in her leg and it poses no future threat it is purely a cosmetic bump and as am not into showing i couldnt care less as long as shes sound and happy lol and she has tested the leg throughly as this mare goes like a rodeo star when playing like a fool in the field and has never had the slighets sign of weakness.
Hope your lump turns out to be as simple as my girls, good luck

mine has a massive lump of scar tissue on her fetlock from an injury as a yearling, the only problems (touch wood!!) it seems to cause are fitting boots, as they often rub. Obviously check with vet, but if it's just cosmetic and its a good horse, wheres the prob!

Thank you for the experiences!

I had thought about fitting boots. It is reasonably high up so hopefully I’ll be able to get some that won’t rub on it, otherwise I’ll go old school and use bandages!

Should be having the vetting on Monday or Tuesday morning if I can get the time off work!
