Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this

My youngster (3) had swollen glands in his throat about 10 days ago, for max 24 hours. Then a slightly snotty nose, again for max 24 hours, on that day he was brought in to hack, and seemed a bit lethargic. Since then, no snot etc , but he has been a little quiet. Completely normal to ride, and eating, drinking fine.

Perked up this week, but Thursday there was a bit of snot again. Took him in the field to see if he wanted a blast (due to age he is only hacking and the odd v light schooling session), which he did and it brought up a load of snot.

Brought him in this morning, snotty again and he has developed what I believe to be a pitted edema on his belly, so ventral. Runs in a line from in front of sheath maybe 12cm straight along middle.

I spoke to the vet about his symptoms earlier in the week, she wasn't concerned said probably a virus, if glands swelled up again give him a bute, so I've given him one today, along with a little cof ease to see if it helps clear up the snot.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? My thoughts were, allergic reaction, virus/cold due to the constant weather change we are currently having!

I would ask your Vet to do a thorough exam of your horse. Check out for any symptoms of strangles, esp given the lethargy. Is your horse drinking, eating ok, temp ok?
My horse has just had a snotty nose, just 1 nostril and the discharge was actually infection from a hole in his tooth. Food had got in, caused an infection which tracked up to his sinuses. He's been to horsepital, had his tooth out, sinuses flushed and has to go back in 2 weeks for his empty tooth cavity packing again. Dont leave to chance , it could be just a virus but if it isnt then it needs prompt treatment. Good luck!

Thanks for replies. I haven't checked his temp, that's a good idea will see if anyone has a thermometer. Re strangles, this is why I spoke to the vet earlier in the week but they weren't concerned. His glands only swelled up for 1 day, and he isn't lethargic as such- he was a little that one day and has been a bit quiet- ie not dragging me to the field as usual! But completely normal to ride out, and as I say he went for a good blast when given the opportunity. He looks bright eyed etc. however your experience with tooth issues has made me think, he is teething, possible it could be related but he is eating fine. All bodily functions are normal too! It's just the on and off snot and now this edema.

Does sound like he's had a virus, checking temperature in the morning before he's had any exercise is a good idea.

A little Vicks Vapour rub in his nostrils each day should help move the snot.

Also worth having teeth checked as he will have caps and new teeth erupting

He had his teeth done on 1st June, and yes was a mouthful of caps! Good idea with the vapour rub thanks :) hopefully the bute will help the edema. If he doesn't improve he will have to have blood tests- I'm not having him filled with drugs without an actual diagnosis. Giving him a couple of days off to see if the snot clears up- he's only ridden 3-4 times a week anyway 80% hacking so won't really matter. Just a bit of an odd combination of symptoms that I've not seen before!

Really? I hadn't even thought of that, he is on the yard worming program, so I don't really worry about it. But it's always a possibility, will look into it thanks!

Update, no snottiness today, edema still big but seems to have shifted slightly to one side (or reduced on one side, I'm not sure). It also seems firmer, I couldn't make an impression in it without pushing really hard (which would of got me kicked lol). Still baffled, another bute given, if no change tomorrow I will swap the bute for an anti histamine!

And don't forget an extra wormer - you don't want to risk the damage migrating roundworm do.
