Just got me thinking today whilst in work , if your horse needed sx and insurance was ethier up to limit or not covered then how how would
U raise the money ( credit card and loan ruled out not available )

Needed surgery? It would depend how much it was, if it was a relatively small amount (under 3k say) that I didn't have but could still repay at a decent rate I could probably borrow from my parents, if not I don't know if I could go ahead with it. It would also depend on the prognosis.

I wouldn't go appealing for donations on facebook or anything like that!

Just curious and random post on what people thought as seen quiete a few things on websites asking for donations but from horses that are in private homes

To be honest at that point i would be thinking seriously about the future of the horse.
I wouldn't put myself in debt over it and as not able to get loan or credit card unless parents or very very good friends would loan it then i don't think there are other options. Unless your vets agree to installments but if its for surgery i doubt a big surgery would.

Surgery? Depends on how much, what it was and the outcome. Probably borrow from parent, if not then depending what it is or how serious then I would think about pts I wouldnt go begging or leave the horse to suffer, again all depends on the circumstances

When Lucy was ill I ran up a very big vet bill.
All the vets involved were very understanding and let me pay in installments. I was still paying off the bill for about a year after she died :o I think it was money well spent, I got an extra 8 months with my angel, although not everyone I know agreed

Don't get me started on those facebook appeals, makes me so mad!! If you can't afford to pay for a horse don't have one, or be prepared to accept responsibility if and when the time comes. I know not everyone has thousands sitting in the bank but most people do have credit options and people they can borrow from.

I have seen a couple of these appeals where someone has taken on a 'rescue' (very overused word) which happens to be a rideable horse who has fallen on hard times (i.e. needs feeding and some tlc) and asking for all rugs and stuff plus cash, whatever they can get. I paid a moderate sum for my horse, if I had got her free and spent that moderate sum on getting her right, and ended up with a good riding horse... Well that would be great for me and a good outcome for the horse, but either way I don't expect anyone to contribute towards my new pet!

There are plenty of proper rescue operations that deserve donations.

suppose it depends on the horse, we thought my 28 yr old had cancer a few months ago! I would determained I would borrow the money to pay for it to be fixed then after a few weeks of thinking, would it really be fair on a horse that age to put her though that? but if I needed it my parents would help me, without hesitation! I think how many yrs of pleasure Kelseys given me, she would be worth every penny!

I'm not the OP, but yes, sx is shorthand for surgery.

I could probably raise about £200 at short notice, my co-sharer perhaps £500 - hence why we part loan a fully insured pony with full insurance cover in the owners name.

If we took him on on full loan, we would need to have a frank discussion with owner re insurance and vets bills etc, as he has had lammi & sweet itch, and still needs remedial farriery, and friend and I are obviously not loaded (yet! ;))
