Has anyone used them or had any experiences with them? I'm looking to invest in a 3.5T box over the summer for my 1 16.1hh tb (600kg) but have quite a tight budget having just graduation with a hefty student loan! (Hence waiting until the summer). They seem to be reasonably priced and offer a payload of around 1300kg which even with tack, water, haynets, horse and me I shouldn't exceed - if I was taking anymore then OH would bring it in the car).

Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Not fussed on make/colour/mileage etc as long as it is comfortable for the horse, reliable, not too high maintence and doesn't guzzle fuel too excessively and it must have power steering! Lol!

Personally i wouldnt look at them for the size horse you have. Their tail to breast bar length isnt very long and generally i think for over a 16hh id def go for a coachbuilt... especially as its not just the standing in it but having to load, you dont want to have to shoehorn them in! Have a look at www.freewebs.com/traveltwo they have nice 2nd hand coachbuilt 3.5 tonners for reasonable prices! Plus Polly is super helpful. I have also been told (not sure if it is true) that these 'vans' arnt actually 100% legal as they have not been built for the purpose of transporting livestock although im not sure about this (pls dont jump down my throat people). Hope this helps.

My friend has one of those from Three Counties (it's the maroon Hi-top one on their website). I posted about it yesterday actually but I can't find the post now.

She travels her very large 17.1hh TB (National Hunt bred so very substantial - he's on the website too!) everywhere in it. We also traveled him and one of my arabs at the same time without being overweight. You'll be totally fine with the payload - in fact these vans can carry more weight than the coach built ones as they're lighter. I can certainly vouch for the excellent build quality of 3 Counties boxes and having traveled in it I know the ride for horses and humans is excellent - much better than in my 7.5t wagon.

Ha ha you're a mate of DebG I expect! Have shared a few curries with her and OH before they defected North. She was well pleased with her box and her OH is a HGV driver so he wouldn't have her in anything not quite right.

Yep you're right! We met through doing endurance rides and have become firm friends

I don't know 3 counties, but I have a Renault Master conversion from Northern horseboxes and I have a heavy hunter mare a tad under 16.3hh. She certainly isn't "shoe horned in". Admittedly length wise it is the limit, height is not a problem and she travels happier in it than in a large traditional wagon!
