...and three completely different opinions on saddle fit! Has any one ever been frustrated by this before?! It's not me, but my friend who has a pony that she has a (Jeffries?) Falcon dressage saddle that she'd had checked by a saddle fitter as a back person had suggested that it needed some flocking work done.

Saddle fitter 1 had checked the fit of it last year when she bought the saddle elsewhere. She thought it fit not too bad, but pony's back in poor shape due to a very ill fitting saddle previously that the owner had for years. She did suggest that she needed a slight lift on one side with a soft pad made by the owner herself, and this did correct the fit but also allowed the pony's back to come up better in (and now there is no more hollow where there had been one from old saddle). Over the past year, the pony has come on huge leaps and bounds in his training, and overall his muscle and condition are looking much better. He's older / arthritic and had a broken leg, so will always have some problems...but the rider would now like a saddle wthi a deeper seat/better knee roll due to her own conformational quirks!

So enter Saddle fitter 2 - who took a look at the saddle and told the owner that the saddle was totally unsuitable for the pony, end of. Told her to buy something else and that the saddle was rubbish. Suggested to her a wintec (and plonked another liveries wintec 500 on the pony's back, and said ride in that, much better than her Falcon). So owner of pony has gone on line and bought a new Wintec 500, awaiting delivery as I write.

Saddle fitter 3 on yard to see someone else so pony owner asks his opinion (borrows other liveries saddle again and tries on so he can see). He tells her that the 500 doesn't fit her pony's shape at all - and that she should cancel her order if she can! Tells her that the seat is too banana shaped for her pony's flatter shaped back and that an isabella is much better. He thinks that she will have similar issues with the 500 that she does the Falcon!

I'm so glad this isn't my pony to have to suit. I know this is a random post, but I'm frustrated FOR my friend! :(

Exactly the same thing has happened to me!! In the year I have had my newest addition I have had 5 saddles and 4 different saddlers all telling me different things - Im starting to get bored of it!! Now out of my saddles I have chosen the one I like best and he goes best in and put a Rambo air pad underneath (although it does tip me foward so am going to buy one that fits me better). I sometimes think saddlers just tell you saddles dont fit because they want to sell you a new one or come out and fit for you again ;)!!

OMG

I cant believe 3 different saddle fitters with 3 different opinions. Surely they should all be trained in the same way to look at horses and riders shape and offer advice on best make to fit. Maybe Im too naive. I cant suggest anything or be helpful but I can feel your friends frustration.

So that really suggests that at least 2 out of three saddle fitters are wrong or lying. That would sound about right to me all things considered. :(

After many years of dealing with many saddle fitters, I have come to the conclusion they are either all useless or they lie in order to sell you a brand new saddle.

Buy a good book or several good books on saddle fitting and learn to do the job yourself. I also have developed a very good feel for how my horse goes in a saddle and whether he's happy or not.

I'm not a fan of Wintecs at all, and suspect that the third saddle fitter may well be the best of the bunch.
if she wants the truth, and a well fitting saddle, and no bull****, then she should imho try either Kay Humphries, if she can get her, who is one of very few saddle fitters I have EVER met who puts the horse's needs first, rather than making £££s.
Or, have a Saddle Company fitter out. A friend has recently trained with them and I've been really impressed by how thoroughly trained and attentive to detail she is. SC saddles are well known for being v good for horses' backs.

TBH, the first saddle fitter IMO is the best of the lot. How the friend ended up with the falcon was because she had a gp, wanted a dressage and bought one off ebay that looked like it would suit. Saddler no 1 came out, and said no, it didn't fit her or horse, but neither did her gp saddle.

So we all scurried round the yard and tried other liveries saddles and this falcon happened to belong to another friend, who was thinking of getting a made-to-measure dressage saddle for her horse. Saddler said that it wasn't a bad saddle for the pony, with a few minor (eg, cost nothing) alterations. Saddle fitter never charged her for anything more than the saddle fit check fee.

Another six months went by, she checked the fit, and the alteration was removed as the problem it was there to fix was sorted. However, another six months went by, and my friend with the pony decided to have a different saddler looksie at it and this is how the rest came to be.

If it were me, I'd probably sell the falcon (there's someone that wants to buy it for the same that she paid for it) and put it toward a new synthetic, as fitted by saddler no 1. I'm not a huge fan of wintec, but I don't mind them either - but I've never really had much to do with them because I've never had a horse to suit one. But my pal now has a dressage championship that she qualified for (which will be later this month) an no saddle! eeeek!
