Today, Team Reggie set off at the crack of dawn (6am. Seriously... Not a fan!) to have what was hopefully going to be a confidence boosting run at a low-pressure event. Arrived and pottered round the XC course, decided it was a lovely course with plenty to make Reg think despite being 90cm, rather than the 1m he's been doing recently.

He warmed up for the dressage beautifully, he improves every time out now and he was soft and supple and really moving well. The warm up area was heaving but he didn't bat an eyelid at various ponies flying about- he's so focussed and calm now it's just lovely :) Unfortunately, the arena was slightly delayed and the warm up was already pushing the boundaries of where he's happy so by the time he got to the test he'd tightened up a little bit behind. This is an issue we're very aware of, as is his instructor, his physio and the vet and the advice is to keep working with him as Al does, building up his stamina. It's working, and he is so much better but he does get slightly inconsistent behind when he's tired. We've still not got any Vetrofen as well which isn't helping!

The judge spoke to Al at the end of her test about this, and was satisfied with Al's response and was very understanding. In the comments, she said she felt she really couldn't give him the top marks due to the inconsistency but once that was resolved every 7 would be an 8. So he was on a 31, nearly straight 7s with an 8 or two as well- this is SO promising... Sub 30s suddenly seem like a real possibility rather than a distant dream!

Love this photo, he is such a gorgeous boy :D (so biased!)

Onto the SJ after a very quick change and everyone was slightly apprehensive. The new technique has been working brilliantly and the course would be a good test as it was causing no end of problems. There was a bank, lots of interesting turns and a very long-strided double... Fregs warmed up sweetly, and blow me down did the most lovely round! Two very unlucky poles- the second part of the double, where he did the 2.5 strides it walked absolutely perfectly and found himself knee deep in poles... Oops! He was very clever and got nearly all his legs out the way but the 4th wasn't quite quick enough. Did the bank complex really well, despite there being ample opportunity for SJ Skittles, and then rubbed the last fence which came down. There were very few clears though, and he jumped very well with no arguments or fussing- many polos for him :D

In the warm up, a video of the round is at the end. He was so good!

Finally, the best bit and Reggie was, as ever, the ultimate XC machine. He stormed round making mincemeat of a course which was causing a lot of stops. Flew the angled houses, the dog-leg coffin, the bank to a skinny, the water complex, the isolated pimple fence (a previous nemesis!)... And was cruising for the most beautiful clear. Locked onto the penultimate fence, a corner, and flew it.

(caused no end of stops!)

You can't deny how adorable he is! He was storming round having one of those amazing rounds where absolutely everything goes well and every fence is just right.

However, Al didn't quite make the corner... A low-hanging branch caught her in the face, and pretty much wiped her off a stride before the fence!!! They made it over the corner as almost-one, and Reg saw his next fence and began to turn to it. Al, however, was busy performing a 180 flip up the neck and over his ears :eek::eek::eek: She hit the ground with a thump, Reg high-tailed it to mum and her first fall of the year was over. Hopped back on, jumped the last to finish well.

Note the desperate attempt to keep hold of Reg- she's a proper PC girl :D All those years of ponies who'd sod off as soon as you hit the ground taught her well....

Gutted doesn't even cover it right now for Al as she feels she let him down. We keep telling her it doesn't count as it was a freak accident rather than anything going wrong, and in her head it should be a lovely clear round. She's pleased as punch with him though and he's eaten his bodyweight in polos :D

Was also lovely to meet dafthoss and the rather awesome Yellow Pony, who I am going to have to pony-steal at some point!

Also, Baby Bee is going SO well!

Loving her cuddles...

And being super grown up in the field. She had her first proper lesson (and was much-approved of, and worked her socks off with NO SPOOKING!), first solo hack (brave pony, she likes her 'string' to follow) and is merrily popping 70cm confidently. And objecting violently to ever touching a pole!

All is good in the land of Team Racehorse it seems :D

Have you ever tried Sjing him in a sheepskin noseband? A really effective way of helping the make the horse more rideable especially if a sensitive horse.

Some very good bits! I was there too and I had a tactic for that corner. I pointed him at it a while off, then lay on his neck until we were over. Absolutely no way we would have fitted under it, so Al has my sympathies! The branches were silly! And so glad you agre on the sj striding. One to two was four and a half too.

Dafthoss, it was me who said hi! Apols for saying, oh, you are, you know... You. I did not quite have the courage of my convictions to say his, you are dafthoss!!

Was just thinking the same as LEC. I used to (try to!) event an ex racehorse that was lively and soft and round till about 3 strides out, it would then stuck its head in the air and I'd be gazing up its nostrils! Sheepskin noseband worked brilliantly!
He looks In Fab condition and I like the new addition!

Go reggie!! Will post my report later just going to do the pony.

Baby B is just to cute!

Thank you :) I think your day has loads of positives to it as well- clever ponies I reckon!

No... Sensible idea, will ask Al about it :) He's a sensitive soul- his head tossing is improving a lot and almost seems to be a habit rather than anything more now. But it doesn't help at all!

Yep, it was very much on pony strides it seemed. I hardly saw any clears at all, mostly faulting at 2, the second part of the double, 7 and 8... Lovely course though, such a fantastic event :) Al forgot her giant hoss and if you look in the video, she's coming off before he takes off. Poor Reg got a proper fright when she landed!

Hope you had a nice day! What section were you in?

Reg loves his eventing on the whole- he tries his socks off in the dressage, is an absolute machine XC (never strong either) and it's just the bloomin SJ that is the issue. His confidence is soaring though, so baby steps hopefully are the way forwards.

Thank you :) He's now on a high-oil low-starch diet, on UlcerCalm and some Maxavita stuff and his condition has never been better. Hopping to move back to Falcon Feeds soon though as those were just fantastic for him as well. Baby Bee is just a little star and is really developing into this brilliant, slightly mad character :D

Fab report - never a dull moment ;)

They are looking like a fantastic team, and I agree the last dressage photo is beautiful :)

We aim to please! I write such epic reports, but cutting them down is hard :D Got to liven things up with a few splats and flying poles!

They have such a strong partnership now, mutual adoration society between them! And thank you- he's so easy to take photos of as he goes so consistently like that now. Before, it was a real effort to catch a good moment :D

Well done I was there too and thought the course was fab. I got the double on a lovely stride so to me it would be long as my horse can put 2 in a standard double!

Aw poor Reg and Al, but actually it was just really unfortunate, nothing to worry about long term from the sounds of things. Understandable that she must be frustrated though. Not sure about sections, didn't know there were sections. I was in the 90 and am far too old for pc, so the non pc section maybe? I had a nice time thanks, we came second so the branch-ducking paid off!

Oh no! What a freakin pain!! I was so hoping reading through that Al was finally going to get the placing she deserves and then a flippin branch jumps out at them, honestly what are the odds. She didn't let him down at all, it's just one of those things. Irritating though!

Forget the blooper - rest of the day sounds superb!! Well done Team Reggie :)

It was a fantastic day :D He was channelling Fig in the stressage I think :O :D

We loved it too, definitely will revisit as it was so lovely and everyone was nice and friendly. The SJ steward gets a special mention as she was so calm and organised- asked everyone about their dressage, sympathised/ congratulated and then gave you lots of warning about when you were in :D

Massive well done, that's brilliant! Those were big sections too! Did the XC cause a lot of problems- it's hard to get a good idea off the commentary if you catch an unfortunate glut of stoppers...

You were in Al's section :D Please may I ask what your score was? Wondering how she would have done without the blip!

Hot to trot, Not really my day, pleased with dressage but the judge and I obviousally disagreed! (section 1) I had a stop at the planks in the SJ but left them all up otherwise then XC i had pilot error at the wishing well but when re approached jumped lovely. I thhough the course was harder than the BE 90 that I have done and it was only his 5th 90 so pleased just disapointed too.

I finished on 37.5, which was DR plus two time, so she would prob have been third?I didn't wait for scores, someone texted me, so not sure what the winner was on, or the other placings. My dad said there were v few sj clears (my husband was just busily making snarky comments about how I was twice the age of the other competitors).

The XC commentator did seem to say there were some issues, I think five was problematic. The water was pushy for that level, not big, but log to drop in, followed by barrels, enough to think about. I bet Al was in the lead after the DR!

That souds like a lot of positives, well done! It was my horse's first time in a DR arena, so I had no idea how he would score. XC yes I agre, there was enough to look at. Pushy water, as I said, skinny, coffin, 5 on the slope, corner (with bonus branches), trakhener, light to dark. Wishing well was a bit tricky as it was just in the middle of a field!

Mum was a bit unimpressed by the lack of learner at the water- it was a bit borderline if it was allowed at Level 3. Shipley, that sounds like a really good day- those planks were spooky and off a funny turn and that wishing well was Al's o_O fence, and Reg has been doing BE100. Definitely an upper end BE90 so the fact it was virtually a clear is awesome :D

HTT, woop! Not sure if she'll be gutted or pleased by that! I am crossing my fingers she got best dressage- that would be absolutely amazing, as last year they got 40+ every time out :D

Hi :D I guesed it was some one off here but didnt have a clue who  YP had just knobbed all the way through the dressage  will go write my report now.

ETA best dressage was on 20 there was a 23 and then my friend on 25 but thats in all sections, sadly my friend also had the person on 20 in her section so didnt get that which would have been a nice comiseration after a xc and sj that went very similar to ours.

Lolo thanks. Yes defiantly given me hope! I might even end up doing a 100 one day! The learned were all lacking when I walked but as more complained they appeared. Eg fence 2 and trakana. Have to say first time not
Seen a L at water. Agree we didn't wait for results either as friend left at 3 hours after and still wernt finalised!!

She's ok, bit sore as she got her shoulder a bit bashed up and the side she broke her collarbone on was feeling a bit creaky. Her face was sorest part I think- she got a proper smack across her eyes, poor girl :( I think the worst bit is they were going so well off a great dressage and a solid SJ performance! Oh well, there's 2 or 3 events left this year so lots of time to get that owed lucky day :D

Well, hopefully another session XC schooling (wish Ickworth wasn't so far away- it would have been perfect!), probably at Blackwater Farm and then maybe the 60cm ODE at Burnham Market if she feels fit enough. Then SJ and dressage over the winter, working up to some bigger courses (maybe 80cm by the end of the year?) and then hopefully get out eventing next year with some PC 80cm stuff, aiming to go 90cm... Eek!

She's at work tonight and is resuming her role as a hunting 'nanny' with a stubble ride tomorrow- first go round is with the lead rein children so nice and sedate. The second has the proviso that "Children must be competent t high speeds in open spaces". We're predicting carnage (not least because the horse she's riding is a little bit strong, and she'll have 3 children to supervise as well!)... Not sure she knows what "Take it easy!" means

Aw, her and D can do twinned reports next year :) He's a proper connie though, rather than a fake one like her (ex-racer who would't look TB if it bashed her on the nose)- much smarter :D
