Thrive horse feeds - reverses cushings!

Has anyone come across the guy from here or these feeds? He was on my yard yesterday dropping feed to a friend whose started using it and I was absolutely shocked. He's claiming these feeds REVERSE cushings, cure laminitis, ulcers etc.

The guy was borderline aggressive with his attitude. Basically told me I was an idiot for having my horse scoped and treated with gastroguard and rescoped to ensure ulcers are gone. Apparently feeding speedi beet is pretty much poison. Supposedly there is no other feed on this planet that isn't coated in molasses other than this one.

He had never heard of the Pure feed company, simple systems etc etc.

I was absolutely hopping mad to be honest. Anyway... the subsequent facebook thread comment on their wall is like this...


Me: Could I see the info whereby cushings has been reversed using this feed please? Assuming a cushings test was done before and after and verified by vet?

I've seen several FB exchanges involving this individual - it's safe to say he is a complete and utter nutjob. :D:D

Try asking him exactly what's in this wonderfeed, then things will get really interesting....
 
I think it has unicorn horn shavings and rainbow dust in it. No way can anyone dispute that it can't reverse Cushings with those ingredients! It also helps horses and ponies live into their mid 100s. It was developed by Prince Adam on the planet of Eternia.

Great stuff! Don't believe the cynics.
 
Hehe. I'm so annoyed- he caught me off guard. Usually I'd wipe the floor with people like that but I was stressing about my bloomin' neddy and couldn't get the words out of my mouth!
 
Definitely sounds like someone to avoid. There are a few threads on forums (including this one) about his sales pitch, including claims that you shouldn't feed hay with it and don't need to worm horses that eat it.

From a quick google (having never heard of it) it does seem to be popular in America, mostly for weight gain. Looks to be an alfalfa and timothy grass chop with added rice bran, soybean meal, kelp and some vitamins and minerals. Nothing too horrible but nothing special either.

But it has been implicated in making gut issues worse. The feed rep guy is clearly a moronic idiot! But if your feeding any form of sugarbeet it might be worth changing :)

I'm not, but that's interesting and something I didn't know :) My feed regime involves variations on a theme of grass... :D

I'll make a note to avoid thrive as well though!

Yeah I've heard this! I've trawled through as many posts as I can about it and came to the conclusion that for some horses it makes them worse but the majority are ok on speedi beet. I'm trying my boy on grass nuts now though :)

Thats all you can do :) My special needs boy is out on permanent life time loan as I just couldnt cope with the stress and didnt even like riding him anyway! His new mum adores him and hes going from strength to strength depsite me thinking I'd have to PTS 6 months ago :)
 
Since when have stable blood sugar levels been a sign that cushings is reversed, or even under control? Idiots.
 
Perhaps they should market to the mounted forces claiming that it turns regular police horses into super mecha death horses with built-in machine guns and lasers!
On a serious note the claims on their FB page that it can cure Cushing's and grass sickness and the pic of a little girl with a Shetland captioned "It has been 7 days without any medication & no signs of any raise in blood sugar" makes me want to go underground, curl up and cry all the water out of my body.
 
Serious question. if there are enough screenshots of these claims would trading standards and/or advertising standards be interested in taking action? seems to me they are making unsubstantiated and dangerous statements when it comes to the welfare of horses that have cushings but people may stop the medication
 
I'm not sure. I had a massive thread with them on their fb page and pointed out they were breaking the law. But they haven't actually written anywhere that it cures or reverses cushings, it was just the guy who reps for them over here that said it to me in person a few days ago. Anyway I deleted the thread as didn't want them to then refuse to deliver to my yard as my friend is now using it and she'd probably be a bit pissed off!!

But yes I believe it breaks the Veterinary Medicines Directorate , but I could be wrong
 
Actually, I've seen threads where this fruitloop has claimed in writing that it cures various things including cushings. The only problem is, I trawl through so many sites I can't remember where I've seen it.
He might have popped up on the Barefoot Horse Owners site, that seems to attract a few 'interesting' personalities...
 
Where he's been questioned about trials etc on the fb page pic of the Shetland pony he's being very careful to say that it's customers' claims rather than say anything himself. Won't be drawn on clinical trials, I quote "Results are results whichever way you see it" - errr, NO!

I wish he could be picked up by the VMD, because even if he isn't making these claims in writing he's letting them be made on his page & not denying them.
 
I should imagine that for some horses in the US this is a 'miracle' feed as it will be vastly different to what they are fed. However here in the UK where we are possibly more open to feeding horses more 'naturally' it's possibly not quite so hocus pocus :D

That and we would so totally rock a rhinestone, nay swarovski crystal encrusted jet engine. In camo, naturally.
 
I remember 'Thrive' from about 20 years ago - it seemed to fall out of favour for a while but obviously they are having another go.
