I'm another who says 'lash' and has never heard anyone use 'latch'. I genuinely didn't know that was a thing.

I didn't know that about Suffolk Punchs but I'm glad I do now. I always love picking up new facts, especially horse-related ones!

I wonder if it's an age thing too? My 1961 Pony Club manual calls it "throat lash (or latch)". By '93 it is only using "lash" (as far as I can find). My mentor, going back to the dark ages, was an ex cavalry chap and he always called it a "latch". It's interesting how language usage changes over time.
