throwing a splint?!!

I've never quite understood why they use that phrase either! It just means that the horse has developed a split - a bony formation on the splint bone, often as a result of trauma. Many horses get them at some stage

yes, a splint is where a part of the bone will split off

very common in driving horse and horses which do a lot of hard road work.

sore for a few days, nomally cold hosed and bandaged

after that the horse can be worked as normall quite happily
