I posted a couple of weeks ago as I thought my mare may have an abscess but after poulticing and her still being lame, we took her to the vets yesterday for x rays etc as we wanted to make sure there was nothing seriously wrong (she came home lame 2 weeks ago from a ODE having finished the XC sound). We were worried she may have damaged a tendon in her foot, no heat, no swelling in the leg at all but really strong digital pulse.

Turns out the vet thinks she has thrush deep in her frog and hopes that thats causing the lameness. Its strange because the farrier has seen her and didnt spot it (!?)

We went to the vet expecting the worst- damaged tendon, arthritic changes (she's 17) but apparently all OK which is great news.

We are cleaning the hoof and frog with Pevedine and spraying deep inside with antiseptic spray from the vet. Any other suggestions on how to fix the problem ASAP?? Also, how long does it usually take to get rid of if its this severe?

Thank you

My Tb constantly has the green spray (engymycin) all winter, he had thrush quite bad last winter and it took about 2 shoeings to get his frog back (farrier cut away most away at the start to get rid of teh diseased bit). You will be suprised how quickly it will grow so dont worry.

Keep in dry field & pick feet out twice a day if poss and very clean and dry bed - i find shavings is the best (half bed with rubber mats) although it depends whether your horsey is dirty with his bed or not!!!

My pony went lame with thrush, it causes lameness apparently if it gets into the tissues inside the hoof. Tried a spray from the vet which is an antibiotic for cattle but it worked a treat. I can't remember the name but it is blue and you only apply once a week. Also used hydrogen peroxide once a week. I'll look for the can when I go down tonight and let you know what it is called

I'm almost sure it is called Terramycin
