I am shopping around for insurance for my new horse and most if not all of the insurers i have tried have excluded it as a pre existing condition.

I have tried KBIS/Petplan/Shearwater/NFU/SEIB who all say the same thing, anyone any ideas/recommendations?

Thanks

Highly unlikely you will find anyone who will cover against thrush or conditions caused by thrush as its considered to have been brought on by bad management.

To be honest thats what i expected, i have a pot of money saved which i would use if anything happened - just have to keep on top of it, my farrier doesn't feel anything wrong with feet so hopefully be ok

Some exclusions that are placed are not permanent and will have the timeframe of 1 policy year, but to get it removed you will need to provide a vet history or statement from your vet to advise the horse has not been treated for thrush since the last occurence.

Was it quite recent? Does your horse have thrush at the moment or was it something that happened a couple of years ago, or has your horse had several ocurrences?

If your horse has or has had any condition at the time you take insurance out, it will be excluded on your policy...thats standard with horse insurance to be honest.

As for the thrush, it is easily managed with meticulous mucking out and hoof hygiene... pick out hooves daily and apply stockholm tar to soles and frogs until clear and then twice weekly to keep them smelling sweet! :)

Hi Elbie,

He does not have it at the moment his feet are fine i have discussed at length with my farrier as i have just purchased him.

I think i will speak to his previous owner and ask her when it last occurred and perhaps ask her vet to put something in writing - i have only had him 3 weeks you see so i can't really prove anything, she did give me some spray to put on it so i assume a vet has looked at it at some point.

Thank You for that you have sparked an idea.

CBFAN - i have been looking at all the foot stuff and i am confident i can keep on top of it as you say. I'm not to bothered about the exclusion really it's so easily managed but if there is a way to get it covered i've got to try haven't i

No problems!

I used to work for one of the companies you mentioned!

I can see their point of placing the exclusion but I would firstly find out from the previous owner if it was just one occurence or several and then see if they can provide you with the vet history.

Once you have this, call the insurance companies back and ask again, and ask them to consult the underwriters for advice and make sure they tell them if your horse only had it once forever ago etc...

If the thrush happened within a year they may well place an exclusion, but this should not be a permanent one. Permanent ones are generally reserved for chronic problems like arthritis, or many bouts of colic.

PM me if you have any more questions! Hopefully I can be of some assistance
