My mare gets thrush in the winter - not too badly only slightly.

i have never used peroxide although widely recommended have heard it can cause frog to disintergrate or something ? and as im not the best person at these things i havent used it as no doubt id do something wrong.

Normally i just pick out her foot, scrub it and dry it then spray with Purple spray and its then ok for a while.

She doesnt get it in summer...only when in the wet seasons.

Her stable is always very clean & her feet are picked out every day, so its not because she standing in filth !!

Any handy tips on how to prevent and/or treat?

thanks

I use hydrogen peroxide occassionally and it seems fine. You can use the stuff to gargle with so, in the right strength, I don't think it can be that bad. I do wash it out well after it's had tome to work...

You can use Sudocrem on thrush, it's effective and it stays put quite well even if you're turning out in muddy conditions.

Another excellent product is Absorbine Thrush Remedy which I get via an Equine Podiatrist. If you're interested and have any problem getting hold of it PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

sheep footrot spray!! i used to look after a pony with very upright boxy feet with deep clefts and this was the only thing that kept the thrush at bay.

thrush hates air.. so the best thing you can do for thrush is to stick stuff on it.. the thrush loves the warm damnness of no air.

The best thing to do to get rid of thrush is to pick the hooves out while the horse is stood on concrete. Srub the frog with water. Scrub the frog with peroxide or jays fluid. leave this to dry, then scrub it again with water. Leave this to dry before returing the horse to the stable.
Are you sure its trush or just a little damp cause it to smell. The smell of thrush will make you feel instintaniously sick. It smells of rotting flesh. Speak to your farrier, he may just cut away the damp frog to reviel nice, quality frog horn underneath.

Scrubbing with hibi scrub or good old plain salt water works well.

If it is looking a little horrible I will use sheep foot rot spray or purple spray.

Peroxide is also good.

Finally, best preventative I have found is stockholm tar - now found it far easier to apply it the tub is stood in hot water to make it runny. Or you can buy liquid tar or get it in spray form. I just pick out feet, brush them and coat the frog and clefts and it works a treat.

Since doing this, Cairo has not had thrush. I also found not wearing shoes really made a difference too - he used to get it all the time even with lots of preventative treatments and now since having shoes off, a bit of tar every now and then when it is warm wet weather has cured him.

I would also recommend a good salt water scrub,my girl is thrush prone, i have never used peroxide as i have always cleared thrush with salt water and also using tea tree oil directly in frog and on sole, also fresh frog is great, as both are antibacterial.
Just carry on with doing what your doing too in terms on clean bedding and regular picking of feet, but yes, a good salt water scrub is great IMO

One of my horses has a "dodgy" foot, and this is where he always gets thrush. My farrier told me to buy newborn disposable nappies and tape it on overnight, so that nothing can get through. Seems to work.

I use salt water (scrub out with) and iodine spray on (about 9% solution) until the thrush has gone then stockholm tar liquid on (when the foot is clean) as a barrier to help prevent it coming back.
