Horse has first signs of thrush in one back foot. Farrier coming tomoro but any thoughts on what can do in meantime? She is in at the moment, and bedding/stable is very clean and dry. Should I put anything on it or leave to dry?

I use either Keratex or Cornucresine frog disinfectant for thrush, works very well - there Keratex is probably slightly better.

I am treating my mare with thrush at the moment with a purple liquid called Gentian Violet. They sell it in countrywide at £4.30 a bottle.

Blue or purple foot rot spray is the best thing, I find. You have to get it from the vets though, but they tend to just sell it to you over the counter if you explain what it's for.

The purple spray you get from the tack shops is not the same thing, it's just a very mild antibacterial spray which might help a little, but won't really get rid of it.

My vet told me to pick out the hoof thoroughly, scrub it with hibiscrub/water solution, dry it off, then spray.

Picking out the feet twice a day is the best way to prevent it, and the occasional spray if it starts to go a bit black and moist.

Mine is prone to it as he has deep clefts, which thrush likes, apparently.

Your farrier will also help by trimming the clefts/frog area so you can keep it clean.
