Hello. My lad has got a touch of thrush in one of his feet. It's in the middle part of the frog.I want to catch it before it gets any worse.I have started to pick out and wash clean the whole sole and frog (on all four feet) then syringe it all over with iodine. Is this a good course of action or can you think of anything else i could do.Thankies!!.

Hydrogen Peroxide...dilute a bit and spray it on!. Or jayz fluid all does the same thing!

The best thing you can do for thrush (apart from calling your farrier and seeing if he can cut some of it away) is to clean it with water, spray it with your for of diinfectant and then stand the neddy on hard, dry ground and leave the hooves to dry.

You would know if you hadn't caught it early..
The smell when you lift the hoof would make you physically rench. No joke!
The smell most people associate with thrush is only a little smell.
Bad thrush makes the frog turn to go and smell like rotton meat.

I love it when hydrogen peroxide fizzes. When my old mare came over from ireland you would have thought she bought a dead hamster with her in all four feet instead of a frog. took over a month to get her feet hardened up and non thrushy....quite disgusting. Hydrogen works, with regular trimming and you can get a spray they use on sheep and cow feet which is really strong disenfectan. It great.

Trying very hard to remember the stuff I bought off PM........... Has Eucaliptus (sp?) oil in it and possibly Tea Tree oil and something else. BRILLIANT stuff. I will get my bottle out tomorrow and note down the ingredients for you, then if you want you can have a bash at making your own.

Also second the Hydrogen peroxide - I used to use that before I got this stuff - this stuff acts as a kind of barrier too. Smell a lot nicer than iodine and not a scarey to use as HP.

All great suggestions!!! H. Peroxide, Iodine, & Jeyes all work very well. The Kevin Bacon Thrush treatment is fabulous!!! Thrush will be gone, & feet/ frog will have dried & hardened within the week.
(If you can't get any I know of a local supplier!)

As a preventative to clear up mild thrush, good old salt water to scrub out feet. Tea tree and Eculptyus oil also help - I put a few drops in some pig oil - yes it is my fetish and then brush the frog and clefts.

For more established - Chemical route - peroxide - great to dry it up. Foot rot spray - blue for sheep really works well.

Wet warm weather - good old stockholm tar - put the tub in very hot water first to get it runny or gold label do a spray - good to keep feet fresh for Chancer, but for Cairo who has very deep clefts I prefer the thick black stuff at this time of year - every couple of weeks wash and dry the foot then cover the frog and fill the clefts. Keep it out of your hair - it is a pig to get out and do it somewhere discrete - I do it in my stable and leave overnight - or my YO finds tar everywhere.

Mine don't wear shoes and I have found that Cairo is 100% better since he had his shoes off. Not always practical. So far Chancer has never suffered.

The stuff I was on about is called Anti-bac (Anti-bacterial solution), but I've gone and forgotten EXACTLY what's in it - I'll text you tomorrow!

Well if he can get a dress on a hoof, that HAS to count as acting........

Hi, just to give you a word of warning. My mare started with a slight touch of thrush about 3 years ago in the middle of the cleft, and I tried the Hyd Per, Iodine etc and this does kill the skin cells and with my mare using these things made things a lot worse and it split all the way up the bulbs and I still have to keep it dry now using an equiboot and gaffer tape with a turnout chap on too. It is fine in the dry but when its wet, it gets soft and just opens up again.
I found out that using too many chemicals have a reaction with each other and can do more harm than good.
The sh*tty thing is that it wasn`t very bad to start with, just a little smelly but not squidgy at all and all this is a real pain each Autumn/Winter/Spring for us both.
I would personally use something that is made for the job in the horse world.
It may be ok for your horse but it definately wasn`t for mine and it is heart breaking now as I have to hack out or hire an indoor school as our menage is sand and rubber and when its wet, it softens her bulbs and then they open and the sand is so abrasive.
Every few days, I squirt the Keratex Nail Disinfectant into all 4 feet and I find that this keeps thrush at bay. Someone has mentioned the Kevin Bacon range, so that might be good too.
I do hope it gets better but I am telling you this as I would hate anyone to have to go through what we have to go through.
Of course this is only my experience and some people may disagree!
Good Luck.

my boy had really nasty thrush a few weeks ago which i was treating with hibiscrub (wrong i know!!!) .
As soon as i started using hydrogen peroxide it started clearing up but called out vet anyway- he gave me the blue oxytetracycline spray which i used and worked amazingly well. Use it every other day now and no sign!!!
smile.gif

horrid thing though- his frogs went all black and stinky and fell apart and couldn't get rid of it - good to catch it early (learn from experience!!)
